Neighbor has an SMTA with a froze engine, flat tires, missing tin, ect. and will sell it "for the price of scrap". Will the rear bolt onto my M? Will I be able to use the TA? My tractor runs/works fine. I have a loader (Oliver 1610), Char-Lynn power steering, Char-Lynn live hydraulics, wide front and hydraulic 3-point hitch. Converted to 12 volt and a keyed ignition. I use this tractor quite a bit. Engine has been rebuilt 2 years ago. Should I bother or leave well enough alone? Thanks

People take the front of a SuperH from the engine forward, and put the rear of a 300 to make an HTA (which never existed from the factory), so yes you can do it. I would think if your rear end has gear problems, it would be best to fix your existing one, for the purposes you state. Biggest advantage would be the live PTO, if you use it a lot. The gearing on the Super M/SMTA is different than your M, biggest difference is that the SM 3rd=M 4th, SM 4th is nearly 7mph (excluding the effect of the TA)

The live PTO would be nice. Planning on using your "M" motor on the "MTA" chassis and rear end? That is about the only way this would work. Do you use your M in the field for tillage or mowing hay? Unless it is a field tractor, the TA wouldn't be that beneficial to you. Unless you are mowing, baling, or doing alot of stop and go PTO work, the live PTO wouldn't be that beneficial to you. Has the MTA been setting inside or outside? That would make a difference to the condition of things inside the trans. and rear end housing. Chances are the TA needs repaired?? Alot of them do. You would have a couple of days time involved in the switch over after the MTA rearend and TA are checked over. If you would be using the TA or PTO alot and the rear end of the MTA is clean.....I would make the switch.

It will be a little work but put the engine from your M in the SMTA. use the bigger clutch from the SMTA I suppose you'll have to change the flywheel too. But on the other hand if you can pick up the SMTA that reasonable it might be worth fixing if the block is good. you could sell your M to defray the cost.

Forgot to add that this M is a worker, not an "as it came from the factory" original. Not that I don't love and appreciate the time, energy and beauty of the restored ones, just that this M ain't no pampered pony and never will be.
