I have Farmall 'B' with an engine casting # 6342 DH and a head with casting # 6716 DB but the piston hits the head on up stroke. Anybody got any words of wisdom?

there must be something different about the new head or possibly the head gasket if that is all you have changed.

Thank you all for your excellant and gracious help. I pulled the head off and found out the # 4 piston is coming above the block! Now I will have to pull another piston out along with this one to see why. Thanks a bunch.

You need to take all the plugs out and look and see if you left something in there as the valves do not come down far enough to hit the top of the piston. The pistons do not come up high enough to hit the head. You might have sparkplugs that have too long enough reach to hit a piston but removing all the plugs and then turning engine over will point that out. let us know what you find. Are you sure that the starter isnt locked up? Turn engine over with crank without plugs.

Had this problem many years ago on an M when a throttle plate screw came loose and was stuck on top of the piston. We put a brass screen above the carb to prevent it happening again.

I wouldn't think a flat top piston would hit the head since it only comes up to the top of the block. But if you had the valves timed wrong, you could have a valve sticking down into the firing chamber at TDC instead of being closed. Also, at least for H's and M's, distillate heads and gas heads have different valves, maybe the longer one got put in your head. Does the tractor run or do you just hear it when you crank it over?

You don't reckon you dropped a nut or washer in one of the cylinders do you?

Did you just overhaul the engine? are they firecrater pistons ? the firecrater piston needs to be put in with the crater towards the plug side or wright side sitting on it.

No sir. The only thing I did was replace the head. The pistons are not firecrater pistons.

Can the problem be too much torque on head or cheap head gasket?

No.

Do the pistons come above the top of the block?

Just pulled the head back off and found the # 4 piston does come above the block. How do I determine the correct pistion or rod to correct this

Obviously the pistons were out since this last ran, so take at least two back out and see what is different.

Did you change pistons or rods? Or both?

Do you still have the old ones around?

The tractor came this way but I had to change the head. I should have known something was wrong when I found 2 head gaskets on the old head. Someone tried to do something stupid and I got the results. I am pulling the pistons tomorrow and fix the problem.
Thaks a million for your help.

You might want to check your timing gears to see if they are correctly indexed..
