i am not a big ih fan however nto starting that discussion. anyways my wifes father owned a farmall H and becasue he owned we got to keep it around. i recently restored it (for her sake i would ahve hauled it to town with the load of scrap but restored it and the origional gas cap was fairly short in terms of height but leaked after i brazed the tank and had it painted the gas cap leaked when going over bumps. so anyways bought a new gas cap and this one was considerably taller for some reason vs the other one the new one is about 3.5 inches tall but anyways it still leaked. i figured that the flange what the cap screws on to must be bent out of wack or something even thought he gas cap screwed on well and nice anyhways bought another tank. installed it. gas cap leaked. so i got another cap still leaks. so with 2 new caps and a new tank i still get fuel splashing out. is this a known problem? is there a fix? i cant figure w/a new tank (which i didnt mean i mean i figured the flang on the old one could have been bent slightly even though to the eye it dindt seem to be and the cap seemed to fit tight and fit nice but got a new tank and w/2 new caps still leaks. what gives. comparing very closly looking the 2 tanks both flanges look same compared 2 gas caps the part numbers the same and even called 3 OTHER (bought it from one called 3 other) ih dealers all said i had the right caps. so waht gives?

If you are having problems with gas leaking out from under the cap, there are two things I did that fixed it on our W6. First, I replaced the old washer with a new one (you can also put the new one on top of the old one to make it even thicker). Besides that, I took my tank to the Case IH dealer and they had a tool that flattens the sealing surface back out. It really did a great job. I used to have gas running all over when the tank was only 1/2 full. Now I can fill the tank and not even have a single drip leak out. Good luck

i tired draw filing the cap area and file seemed to shine it all up equally. the tank will slosh gas out with it 1/4 to 1/2 full. dont like it splashing on my new paint job. the tank was replaced with a nos not a used tank. is there any reason the new caps tehy gave me are so tall vs the origional domed one. new one like i said is a 3.5 inch tall cylinder. i will also try ordering that replacment cap. thanks for the help

I believe that the new caps are taller because I've read they have a triple baffle system inside the cap. I take it to mean there are 3 individual vented horizontial disks inside the new caps. In theroy it would take a one in a million splash to get through all three baffles. On my original M cap, I stopped the leaking by just replacing the gasket with a new one from CaseIH. A couple of $'s at most. Also I don't fill the tank all the way up anymore as I bring the tractor in for lunch and refuel.

Don"t fill the tank to full!!! A H is not hard on gas. Also gas will come out the vent in the cap.

Now that you have been through all this, did anyone tell you that you can get new FREE safety gas caps for the old Farmalls? Go to the link below to download a form to mail in. Delivery does take from 3 weeks to 3 months, depending on how lucky you are in getting into the order cycle.

Try draw-filing the tank flange to remove any high spots & locate low spots that have developed over the years due to damages caused to the sealing flange from re-filling the tank with 5 gallon cans & who knows what else.

If you meant to say you replaced the old tank with a NOS tank meaning brand spanking new then the new cap should have worked just fine unless the neoprene seal is defective. I read your post to mean you replaced the original tank with another used one, just new to the tractor. Napa could very well carry thicker neoprene seals of the correct diameter. I have just had good luck making my own out of 1/8 or 3/16 high density sheet cork which is the same material I make my own valve cover and oil pan gaskets out of.

Your dislike of Farmalls is noted. There is a possibility that both caps have a defective cork or neoprene seal in them. As well, the tangs on the bottom of the cap that fit into the opposing openings may not be tightening down the cap far enough due to prior wear on the flange to make the cap seal against the neck of the tank. When this happens to me I make a cork seal from bulk sheet cork that is somewhat thicker than the seal in the new cap. Remove the old (New) seal and replace it with the one cut from the sheet cork. Has always fixed my leakers. Adapt and overcome.
