B Farmall Exhaust Lift - do you want one?

I"m thinking really hard about making some new Exhaust lift manifolds for early B farmalls.
I"ve got a few rusty broken ones and new ones just aren"t to be found anywhere.

The master mold and initial casting run will set me back many thousands of dollars. It"s pretty expensive. (doesn"t even include the flipper inside)

"IF" I take the plunge and do this, what do you think people will be willing to pay? The e-bay auctions for exhaust lift related parts are just nuts!! I"m thinking $100+ dollars???

Am I nuts or should I do this? Do you know anybody that wants/needs one? Is there support for this? I still have to convince my wife. :-)

Thanks!

Mike M.

2500 is way too much for a casting. Look into rapid prototyping and in paticular SLA. Stereolithography is a pretty efficient method of making a model, and that is probabbly the most expensive part of casting as all else is just packing oiled sand around a model. A two piece SLA model is all you would need to make the impression in the mold, and if made right, you can use it to make the sand core that you would need as well. Do a search on SLA and stereolithography and just check it out. If you have a friend who can make you a 3D CAD model that will reduce your costs as well. I have to do a stereolithography modeling project for a class I am taking now and I was thinking of making a cylinder head mold.

If some one made the valve that went on the exhaust I would be happy to buy one/help them out. It seems to me that it's really the part that wears out. I think I could have a working system if I had one!

$2,500 for a mold, shop around, and cast them in the material they were made of.

Speaking of the original casting... Does anybody know what type of alloy went into those Exhaust lift manifolds?

I have a choice of going with the original (whatever that is) or going with something like high temp stainless.

Obviously stainless would be superior since it doensn't oxidize. But would anybody actually want a stainless one, even if its not 100% original equipement? Are restorer folks that fussy?

Would be a great idea but to make any money on them forget it. I have some parts and when they are priced out they mostly dont buy.The last bowls I-H had were priced out at around 350 but now they are gone. The flappers are stil avail for 27 dont have a price on the l-shaped rod is.Sounds like pricey for the mold i would shop around.good luck gene b

gene b,

Where can I get the new flapper and the L shaped rod? I have one of each but are rusted badly. To make new ones it would be nice to have an original.

I read every thread on the topic, and I'm sure there are others that do too.

My BN has a BN-187 two way plow that's all set up for the exhaust lift (now it uses a custom built hydro setup that works, but looks pretty odd) and would love to get it hooked back up so it looked original.

I think I would try to make the a new manifold valve better then original if possable, the old one has it's problems, why make a new one with the new one the same way?

Count me in if you need any help!

Those are neat plows i have one for the B and one for the BN also both are exhaust lift. Does yours have the rubber tires for guage wheels? Neither one has the joiners. Verry handy for plowing gardens.

I have the steel guage wheels, but I think I *might* have rims for for the rubber gauage wheels sitting off in a corner. I haven't looked at them to make sure, but they look like they are the right size and the A-187 plow I have is missing the wheels so who knows, I'll have to check into that.

No joiners just coulters. I've plowed with them once and they worked well after I figured out how to adjust every thing. It was great fun plowing as well, and I would do it every year but the plows take a half a day to install!

I think I'm going to get my disks back, turn up some ground with the plows, disk it, and then try the A-110 check row planter I have (it's been modified to fit the BN). Someday....

Since a new import manifold is $150 to $200, I would think $300 would be reasonable for anyone wanting the feature. $500 might not be too high.

It is hard to overestimate the size of the market for A's and B's. Many thousands in collections and many more just waiting, trying to avoid the scrap heap by hiding in old barns and fence rows.

I know that questions asking whether exhaust lift parts are available, or where to look for them, are not uncommon on this board. So there must be some demand for them. Whether each question equates to a customer who would actually buy the part is a lot bigger question.
Even though my B doesn't have the exhaust lift, the BN I grew up on did, so I'm familiar with them.
I think it would be great if somebody could make new parts available, but I have no idea how to gage whether the demand is sufficient to justify the initial investment.
Best of luck on it, if you decide to do it.
