Thanks Allan. What is the model of that IH (HP?)and how many row chopper do you figure that is?

5 below in NH but the wind has stopped, cattle fed, class lessons finished and new primer on the shop project...stove warm... life is good

Hi Farr,

That is a 1976 966 which is rated roughly 105-108 horse or thereabouts (depends on who you talk to).

The chopper appears to be a New Holland; it is a 2 row and he is pulling in 2nd gear, low range with the T/A stick ahead.

I'm not real wild about his wagon setup; I always like to use these Richardtons, but maybe he lives in hilly country and don't trust a Richardton to stay on it's feet, who knows? :>)

Man Allan, you sure know what buttons of mine to push. Boy does that bring back memories! Dad and I about got gassed in the silo one fall... that wasn't so great. Still I liked putting up silage. The old cows would lick the squeezens off the silo for days!

Hi Bill,

We never did use a silo; too darned poor, I think.

First, we dug a trench and filled it. Well, don't ya know that was the year it wouldn't stop raining. So, that little experiment came to a screachin' halt.

Always just built a mountain of silage; usually about 90 acres a year and packed it with a tractor.

No silos around here either. Some use pits but most is piled on top of the ground.

What ever works! It'd be better than not grabbing a lungful for a couple of months. That gas is every bit as horrible as people tell. With the pile you wouldn't have to crawl up that godawful thing either. Now that was a crapy ordeal! I'd MUCH rather put up small bales! I did like filling the silo though. Any of the fall tractor work was fun.

Guy I know had a dairy farm before the goverment took it to build a camp ground but he said they had a couple of cows that would get in pit to drink juice and he claimed it made them so drunk that they would be on there knees tring to get out.

Hey Allan I don't disagree with you but...-19*C this morning here along Lake Huron's eastern shore, I went out to the farm and did the chores,and went to the feed mill and I'm home now in front of the computer and my remedy for cold is...a pina colada down in the family room beside my down draft wood stove....now that may not be as pretty as being out doing field work on a nice day..but it warms my old knees up and tastes pretty good..I don't need to leave the house until tonight when the team has their hockey practice, I got three injuries that I have to doctor and do a nutrition presentation..the life of a hockey trainer..anyway where ever you are stay warm and remember you lose 25% of your body heat through your head, since I'm bald it could be higher than that....Mike in Exeter Ontario..Go Exeter Hawks!

Over half of the corn around here is still waiting on the combine. Most are usually thru before Thanksgiving but it has kept raining this year. Lots of snow in the high country, over 7,000 feet. Bright sun an dry for the last few days so the corn is drying out but the fields need to freeze for getting around with a combine.

Corn chopping is mosttly done in September around here. Not a lot of working red tractors around here any more, too bad.

Brrrrr rrrrr! Minus 30C with a stiff breeze in eastern Ontario this morning. Got up and got the wife's car out of the garage so she could go to work! She has to share garage with Super A that froze up yesterday, he quit on me out in the field (just drivin' around). Towed him home with C by myself (now that is a chore by yourself getting that thing to follow!) Got some gas line A/F into him and dumped ice outta sediment bowl) and coaxed him to run long enough to get him into garage for more lookin'.
