Has anyone converted the brakes on a Super A from the old style (S/N 250001 to 339641) to the new style w/ toggle (S/N 339642 & up). Do the new style brakes work better? If so, is the improvment worth the trouble & expense? I am now in the process of replacing bearings, oiler gear, and seals in the transmission, and all seals in the final drives. My tractor is a "working" tractor used to mow about 6 acres of grass. Thanks for any responses.

Ed: I suspect your castings will not take the new type brakes. I am only going from memory. I have a Super A with old type and a 130 with the new type. I have had both apart, not at same time, but would say the castings are different. I would check part numbers on those final drives, before starting.

I cant see a great difference in the effectiveness of either type. My brake bands are relatively new on both tractors. I wouldn't spend a whole lot of money to change over. I realize the new type band is much less expensive.

Thanks Hugh. The thing that got me interested in this was that the parts manual listed a field change kit that is no longer available, but the individual parts are available. The price that I was quoted for the toggle alone was as much as a new "old style" band assembly. You've told me all I need to know. Since there is not much difference in performance, it's not worth the expense.

On a different subject, what is your opinion on using a used oiler gear for the transmission? I've heard that new ones from a dealer cost 4x what a good used one costs. Then again, given everything that is involved in this project, I don't want to risk having to do it again.

Thanks for your response.

Ed: I know how you feel about that oiler gear. Been expecting that one to happen as I have 3 of these tractors and that has never been replaced on any of them. I guess the way CaseIH parts man talks me into some of these "hard to imagine price on items", is just think how well original lasted, you will not need to buy it again. That is how he handled brake retaining springs at $28. CAD.

I get used ones for 45 and cant tell from new. All the do is throw oil up to the pto assy so if you dont use pto they are not that important.
