DWV this is my starter. The tractor is a Louisville. Are you saying that the rod on top is a bendix engager?

Forgot to add,if you can post # on metal tag on starter someone can tell you what it originally
was used on.Also the LP starters that look like your picture were used on some 100 series.

IH used starter like your picture on some LP and Diesel tractors.Looks like may be for 400 or 450 Diesel,.Yes rod engages bendix when seloniod
is energized.Hope this helps.

I'm not DWV but that is like a Chevy starter with the solenoid to engage the starter drive instead of using armature acceleration to drive it down the screw thread. One end of the solenoid makes the contact and the other end has a lever with a fork to move the starter drive.
