Any time I really work my 504 gas it will start to dump some oil out of the breather (top of valve cover). Not a whole lot, just enuf to fill the lip of the valve cover. I didn't notice any problems with the pistions (fire craters) when I did a head gasket 50 hrs or so ago. And their is no problem with starting, smoke, or power. Any suggestions on what it might be?? Thanks!

I would check valve clearance first when hot. Then check timing.

First and easiest things to check are the air cleaner (mesh as well as canister, oil correct for temp?). Is the breather mesh clean? Is the tube from air cleaner to block open? If there is a mesh inside the lifter chamber, is that clean as well?

Try Marvel Mystery Oil in the gas to free stuck rings. Maybe ATF works just as good, but I've had success with MMO. It may just clear up after several tanks of fuel.

Of course it won't fix valve guides.

How about crankcase breathers or is there a breather tube like the H and M out the back of the head to the air cleaner? Would that do that if one of them was pluged or something? JON

When you had the head off, was any thing done to it? Did this just start after the head was off, or was it doing it some before also? Does it use oil?

Possibilities are that you have worn or stuck rings on your pistons. Working the engine hard will heat up the combustion chamber and oil more vaporizing it and making it more susceptible to fogging and moving out with compression gasses by passing the rings. Another possibility is that the exhaust valve guides are worn to the point that they are letting exhaust gas past into the head, also pushing out oil vapors with the escaping exhaust gas.

I changed the head (forgot to post eariler) The origonal was cracked so I changed it with one from a 2504. It sat around for a long time and the valves were slightly stuck...loosened them up and adjusted the valves and it works ok.

The air cleaner is clean and free, the oil is probably heavy since it is in the teens, but it seem'd to do it in the summer too while flail mowing. I did compression tests on it after adjusting the valves origonally and they were all pretty stong and even. I'll try some mystery oil and see if it helps. The tractor wasn't used a whole lot before I got it...but I do know it was abused..... ....
