I was wondering how you guys plow snow with your tractors ( no cabs) and don't freeze to death? I was plowing yesterday with my truck and with the wind, cold and white outs, I think I would have been frozen in 10 minutes on an open tractor.

I blow snow with a rear mounted blower on the M TA and I love it. Dress for it and its no worse than snowmobiling. Besides anyone who removes snow with a tractor loves tractors and loves operating them.

You just dress for the weather. It sure makes me laugh at people that complain how cold it is and they won"t even wear a hat or they go snowmobiling at 90 mph, for all day, and don"t complain at all. In the late 40"s and 50"s I used to plow our long drive way with a Super A or H before breakfast so the milk truck could get in and after breakfast haul three loads of manure out some times to one of the other farms at 3 1/2 miles away with an open tractor. Then in the 50"s we got a comfort cab for the M and I used that and boy what a difference. I still use an open tractor with a bucket or an open tractor with a snow blower to clean out. Yeah, I notice the cold a lot more than I used to but I still just dress for the weather and that includes a good hat and glkoves.

We get a lot of snow here in Northern Mi, until 4 years ago when we bought a old plow truck we always used the lil 8n with a homemade blade on the loader, no cab on there, we just dressed as warm as possible and if you got too cold you went inside for a few minutes.. That lil tractor would push the snow that for sure, when it was really cold we would put the trouble light right by the distributor and one by the carb, the light bulb would heat them up and then it would start,,,Jim

When I bought my first tractor, a '47 M (specifically for snow removal) A heat houser came with it. It was about 30 years old and pretty shot, but I patched the holes and fixed 'er up and it REALLY works well. I also use my hunting coveralls good down to -30 degrees, and my hunting full face bella-clava over my face, and I almost get too hot. I do totally block off the grille to get the operating temp up where Iwant it. I cannot let it get too warm or the old M&W hyraulic pump starts to slow the hydraulics down noticeably. I try to keep the temp needle just short of vertical, and everything is good.

John, I"ve found that dressing for the occasion helps as much as anything when doing anything, including plowing snow on an open station tractor in frigid weather. One of our guys insisted on mounting the snow blade on an open station IH 966 rather than a 1456 with cab. Dumb, huh? Anyway, at zero-F, I put the thermal socks on under thermal boots, sweat pants under bluejeans and Carhart bibs, T-shirt, hooded sweatshirt, carhart vest under artic carhart coat, ski mask, and lined mittins, and was warm as toast. I was on the tractor for 4 hours straight. Other than the limitations placed on moving and climbing up and down the tractor, I felt much warmer than the evening, years ago, when I decided to attend a U. of Miami vs U. of Fla football game in 50-F weather in short sleeves. As soon as the sun went down, I got a chill through my body that took a half bottle of rum to purge out of my system. As I said, its all a matter of dressing properly for the occasion.

John. You and I should meet. We live pretty close to one another so I think the weather we were experiencing was pretty much the same. I plowed out with my H at around 2:30PM yesterday and it wasn't so bad. Long underwear, pants, sweatshirt with Carhart insulated coveralls, pack boots and a hood and I was toasty (we'll see how I feel about it when I'm ten years older). You may have seen my earlier post. I was a bit wary of carb icing, pushing snow in the wind, so I rigged an intake heater around the muffler. Nary a problem.

I was actually a little disappointed. We only got about a foot. That snowstorm Channel 3 called Daniel, two years ago - the eighteen incher - was one of the inspirations for me getting the H. I was hoping for an equivalent storm to test it out in. Send me an E-mail. My E-mail address is dneill@snet.net_remove_all_characters_after_the_net.

P.S. I've also got a tank heater to help with the wear on the engine in those cold-weather starts.

On my M I have a heat houser (used to be called a "comfort cover"), insulated coveralls, (or snowmobile suit if it is really nasty) hooded sweatshirt, very warm cap or hat, and mittens. I also stoke up the wood stove in my shop for frequent brief warm up sessions! Lately I've been "letting" my 16 year old son do it! I found out I stay warmer that way ! :>}

captain: Problem with 16 year old sons, they tend to leave home in 3-4 years. Then you find yourself gone soft, or is it just 4 years older. been there and done that.

I'm thinking of adopting a policy of never using air conditioning or heating oil, once over 65. Just operate like the migrating birds.

That is probably going to come true. As a backup I have a front mounted snow blower that I can put on my 966 with a cab. Someday I'm gonna find the pictures of me using it a few years back and post them.

John: I'm close to 63, will admit it was much easier to take 40 years ago. I plowed my first snow with a shiney new Farmall 300 in 1956, no cab. Interesting part I had two tractors with cabs over the years, never plowed snow with either of them. I have plowed with heat housers, they do quite well. I now plow with my Farmall 130. Those are rather difficult to install a heat houser on.

The tractor at 47 year of age is still up to it, however the 63 year old flesh is not.

A snowmobile suit and helmet and if I can spend seven or eight hours snowmobiling and be comfortable I can blow the whole yard in about an hour and a half. I can tell you that I've tried clearing snow with just jacket, hat and mitts and you don't survive long like that. I usually try to leave blowing snow until I am sure the storm is over and that means walking in the lane to do chores sometimes. I don't mind blowing out the yard and lanes but it does take some time, I've got a good set up for moving snow..seven foot Lucknow two stage blower on a 52 horse tractor....That's my method...Mike in Exeter Ontario

i just wear a good pair of long undies, jeans and a good heavy flannel, then my carhart bibs and coat. good heavy gloves and hat. good to go all day. if the wind is really nasty i break out the snowmobile helmet. get er done!

Heat houser works well on my 3020. Can work in shirt sleeves once the gas engine warms up. Only chilly or wet when you have a following wind/snow.
I sometimes do the 3/4 mile of county road out to the blacktop. Can run in 7th or 8th gear. Really throws the snow with a 7' or is it 8' blade.

2 piece wool long underwear, silk union suit under it (both from Cabelas), t-shirt, jeans and flannel shirt. Wool sweater. Carheart regular 2 pc bibs and coat, baclava around the neck, ball cap, wool helmet liner, balistic goggles, regular socks, wool socks, insulated boots, insulated mittons over jersey gloves.

Gets me down to -5 on an ATV checking the cows or putting out round bales. Warm as toast Sat with a 50 mph north wind and drving snow at 12 above ambient for 6 hours. Forget a heavy coat, keep layering, eventually it will be enough. Only time I ever got really cold was in 1993 when I had to put in an hour of road time on the tractor and didnt have ballistic goggles, eyes teared up and then the tears froze.

Two week"s ago it was -38 degrees Celcius with a wind, any thing below -25 degrees Celcius is just is just darn cold to me here in central Alberta,Canada. Many layers of clothes and frequent stops to go inside the house to warm up helps but other than that grin and bear it that"s life here.

I plow with my H with no heat houser...just free air... I stay warm with my carhartts and a fleece balaclava.

I had a good set up with a Chevy Blazer, and had located a plow for it but opted to stay with the H. Why?

a)ANYTHING to get out of the house...it takes longer on the tractor.
b) built in excuse to sit by the fire and maybe fall asleep.
c) my wife cooks me a nice hot meal when I come in from FRIGID temps after battling the snow (she doesn't know I call it fun!)
b) yep, I think we northerners are tough.
