Yes delco made a 12 volt for different aplications. But Most people just keep using there 6 volt with a 12 volt charging system and battery. I guess if you have a hard starting diesle maybe you might want 12 and then the MDs had a 12 .I can give you different #s but I dont know if your talking about a 3 hole or 2 hole starter. JON

thanks magman, for your reply, my m is a 1946 model and is very basic. it hasn`t ever had a starter or electrics. it originaly came out with a magneto, hence a crank handle. it`s a bit cranky to start, so would like electric start.so 6volt or 12volt would do, and it is a 2 hole mount.

I would go with the reg 6 volt starter you can up grade to 12 volt battery and alt if you want. Or you can just go with the stock 6 vt system probly about the same price either way. Are you keeping the mag on her or going to a distributor? either way with 6 or 12 make sure you use heavy cables that makes alot of difference. PS I have run a H for over 25 years now with a mag and a 12 volt battery to start her when I cant roll her. I just charge the battery every month or 6 weeks or so. A good Tuned mag can make alot of difference in how many times she turns before she fires. JON
