826D Is it normal??

I have a couple questions. I have an 826D and especially when its cool it smokes pretty heavy when I start it up. It runs a little rough for a few minutes but as it warms up it really smoothes out and most of the smoke clears up. First is this normal? Second, is there anything I can do to help get rid of some of the smoke? It doesn't use any oil but the tach does show 8000+ hrs. I was thinking maybe it was something in the injectors or clogged air filter. Any suggestions? Thanks

Yep, that is the mark of a an awesome, cheap running engine. I don't quite rank the D358 as highly as I do the D310, but still a fuel sipper none the less. I sort of chuckle when I see guys getting all bent out of shape over smoke on start up or a touch of it while under no load after warming up. If she is running clean in the field under a hard pull, USE IT! Like the old saying goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

Our old 706 with the D282 would send me and my brother running out of the corn crib in the winter after start up(Which was proceeded by being plugged in for 10 hrs, then either to boot as it still didn't fire with the glow plugs once it got below ten), which was sort of good as it got me PO'ed at it. Buddy, when I pulled along side that crib with the feed grinder and really started putting the corn into it the smoke was all but a memory and the old girl had better start talking to me because paybacks are H*ll(LOL).

You know what, she did a good job for us and we never laid a wrench on it.

826TN: I think it is working quite normal. I have probably clocked 200,000 hours of diesels under my care and control in my life time. A few of them didn't smoke for the first 1,000 hours when new. I can remember one truck in particular, at freezing temps, it would smoke so bad you couldn't see what it was 1,000 feet away. Cleared right up in about 30 seconds. On the highway it would outpull many other trucks, was very fuel efficient. It ran that way for 200,000 more miles, before needing repairs. I bought a new 1066 in 1975, didn't smoke when new, cold starting. By 2,000 hours it did smoke on cold starts.

People who tell you their diesels with more than 2,000 hours, don't smoke on cold starts are much like sport fishermen talking about the one that got away. They are liars. If your diesel starts well, has good power, doesn't leak all over the place, doesn't use excessive motor oil or anti-freeze. It's in good shape, if it aint broke don't fix it. This is precisely what made diesels so attractive, you didn't have to be tuning up all the time. They are just a problem for the guys who like to tinker.

Likely a bit normal. We've got an extremely low houred 826 that smokes a bit til it warms up - then it is the cleanest exhaust & no smoke the rest of the day. Clean air filters really seem to be a necessity on the 8.

826,

The big boys tell me that this is "normal" and the reason they do this is because this engine was designed around a 15:1 compression ratio.

They tell me that the cure is to install the high compression (17:1) pistons and to make sure the valves and seats are up to standard specs (you can't grind the valves and seats on a German engine, as this will lower the ratio even more).

I, for one, just cannot get used to this little 'cold smoke' feature, so as soon as my 966 gets outta the shop, in this one goes. :>(

Always somptin',

Allan

Hey, Allen in NE, can you e-mail me directly? I'd like to talk to you more about the high compression pistons. Seems like I've read that before. Might have been from one of your posts. Are they a dealer item? Thanks

i think its common to the german diesels to run that way, smoke that stings your eyes when it starts up.

You know, if you think it's a clogged air filter, WHY DON'T YOU CHANGE IT INSTEAD OF TALKING ABOUT IT? A new air filter wouldn't hurt a thing. Probably won't help, but it won't hurt.

As the other guys say, it's probably dirty injectors. There's this fuel treatment and injector cleaner called Diesel 9-1-1 that a local mechanic turned us on to. There are two formulas, a fuel treatment and an injector cleaner. The stuff works wonders. You can get it at your local Tractor Supply, and probably at most farm equipment or truck dealers. Dump some injector cleaner in each time you fill up. The more you run the tractor, the better it runs...

Novel Idea Guy, I was only asking a question, not looking for an ignorant attitude. Thanks to everyone else that responded with actual helpful information.

That's just how N.I.G. is. If he doesn't come back with a smart-a$$ answer, he don't think he's participating. Some people just get off being jerks. He is ours. Don't make it any easier to get along with him, just a fact. Disgusted, Harley

Sounds like an injector sticking until it warms up. With that many hours, who knows the last time if ever they've been checked. The needle could be stuck and dumping fuel in or injecting at the wrong time.

when you get ready to start your tractor make sure the fule shut off rod is in the middle way of being clear in or clear out it has a dent place in it this helps when starting the engine .

I had a 826 years ago sweat tractor if it was above 50 degrees out. I was told the valves make a big difference. I installed coolant heater and learned to live with the smoke. We have a Cummins in our 4 wheel drive tractor it will blow smoke rings for 5 minutes when really cold out so I guess the 826 isn't to bad.
