Cub Shuts Down

Hello,
My 51 Cub starts well and runs during warmup for about one minute, then begins to sputter. The engine shuts down shortly after that. It will restart after about thirty minutes and do the same thing. The rough running after startup has been there for quite a while, but the engine always continued to run and smooth out after a few more minutes. Any ideas out there. Any help is appreciated.

MikeC

Don't forget to check that the vent in the fuel cap isn't blocked. That also can cause fuel starvation.

If it has a battery ingnition I'd start by hot wireing it. If it runs then its the switch and or wires. If that doesn't do any thing its coil, condenser or fuel problems

Yea, I agree with the two fellers about the possibility of either fuel or spark. I might add that when it does quit running, maybe you could pull a plug wire and see if it's got spark so that you can determine if it is indeed an ignition problem or fuel.

Good luck,

Buzz

Either fuel flow or it could be the condenser.Check fuel first.

Likely a fuel flow problem, check the sediment bowl, including the outlet in the tank and the screen in the fitting in the carb that the line screws into. If ok your carb could need cleaning. Could also be the coil, except that usually it will run longer and then quit.

Ya I would bet fuel problem...I had one that did the same thing. I found a piece of rust sticking out of the fuel outlet (in the tank) don't let the gasoline fumes burn your eyes when you look inside the tank.
