Anyone have any recommendations on how to get the rubber grommet that's at the bottom of the seat into the shaft? We lack about three inches of pushing it far enough in. I'm sure we can get it done, just wondering if anyone knew a good trick to make it easy.

I used quite a bit of WD40, a few slect words plus putting in the bolts and using a hammer. The rubber washers or whatever they are on each side were easy once I got the rubber covered shaft centered.

three inches????? ?? It is supposed to be two little bushings about an inch long. They go in from each side. I use shock absorber bushings that I get for free from my friends.

IHS585 is the correct one. IH never used a rubber bushing in the center.

Interesting to know. It explains why it's such a chore to get this done, but I think once we get it in there it will provide an extra level of stability and make those grommets on either side last a little longer. Then again, if it becomes too much of a pain, I can back up and punt. "Sorry dad, we just got the wrong part"...

There are two one inch grommets on either side, but there's supposed to be a four inch (or so) grommet in the middle as well that's slightly smaller than the outside grommets. That's the one I'm trying to get centered in the middle of the shaft at the moment. I believe it's going to be an experience similar to what was described in the other response. A lot of WD-40, even more patience, and maybe a few choice phrases.

I think the key is keeping the rubber centered on the metal shaft. I finally was able to do this by using some washers the size of the shaft and the bolt tightened enough to keep it that way as I helped the rubber into its seat with some tapping with a hammer. I did it, so I'm sure you'll get it done.
