I have an A and after running it for about 30 mins, it coughs and stall out. sometimes it will start back up but I leave it cool down and it fires right up. It is getting fuel and as for spark, I cannot hand crank it and check at the same time. It does have a magneto - I thought the coil was getting warm and cutting out

any input welcome

also thank you all who replied to my case IH 235 posting

John

My vote is the coil in the magneto, but you might want to check fuel flow to the carburetor to make sure it has a good supply.

My 2 cents.

I certainly wouldn't discount those fuel related problems. I have to deal with those too and they certainly can give those symptoms but it sounds to me to be most likey the coil as you say. Starting and running fine until it gets hot and refusing to start until it cools down is a classic symptom. Perhaps though, another possibility would be a plug related problem. I know that plugs of the improper heat range will act just as you describe. Even if they are the same plugs that you have been running for quite a while with no problem, sometimes they break down and develop faults that do not become evident until they are good and hot. If you change them out make sure that you are getting the proper range. Many of the plugs on older tractors have been moved up a heat range over time to reflect changes in gasoline composition. What you have in there may not neccessarily be what is recommended now. Your dealer or many of those who deal with antique tractor plugs would be able to tell you.

Farmall John, there's a real easy way to check your coil..when it cuts out on you, pour some cold water on the coil and cool it down, then if it fires right up you know the coil is at fault. I'd check the fuel flow from the tank as well...Mike in Exeter Ontraio

I have a 140 that did sort of the same thing. Mostly would stall on an incline. Took the carb. apart and was surprised at the amount of dirt in it. Gave it a good cleaning and the problem went away. May or may not be your problem but it doesn't cost anything to take a look inside.

If you have a dark place to work take a piece of duct tape and take the coil wire out of the dist cap and tape it about 1/4" away from the screw on the side of the mag then as you crank her look back and see what color or if you have spark. I can help you out with any parts or rebuilds if nessisary just let me know. JON

MY DISTRIBUTOR WAS SHOT WHEN IT DID IT TO ME. ALSO CHECK THAT THE GROUND CABLE IS GOOD. SOUNDS FAR-FETCHED BUT THAT CAUSES A LOT OF PROBLEMS.

I have an A that was doing the same thing. Turned out to be trash restricting the fuel and or causing the float to stick.
