Farmall M rebuilt starter-which type

I have a 1941 Farmall M (ser no. FBK114XX). I burnt up the starter. I'm not sure if it was originally a 6 volt or if was a 12 volt. My tractor is 12V neg ground. I went to ValuBuilt website to buy a starter and am confused by the many options. Some are 6 volt, some are 12 volt and one makes mention of counterclockwise rotation. Also the listings imply that the tractors were 12volt from 1944 on. I was told that Ms and MDs use starters that rotate in different directions so they can't interchange but the listings show a starter that has both Ms and MDs listed in the application. Can anyone tell me what I need. I presume a 12volt since that is what my battery is but I dont want to get a starter that wont bolt up or spins the wrong way. My starter flange has two bolt holes and the starter only has one post where the positive cable bolts on. There is no solenoid on the side of the starter like a car has.--Erik

CHECK THE SOLONOID FIRST. THE STARTER COULD BE GONE , BUT START THERE. GET ONE OFF AN OLD FORD PICKUP TO SEE IF THATS IT.

There is no solenoid on a Farmall M, unless it was added later during a conversion of some sort.

I SHOULD HAVE READ THE STORY CLOSER. IF IT IS A 6 VOLT POSSITIVE GROUND TRACTOR. WHY IS THERE A 12 V NEG GROUND BATTERY. NOT A GOOD COMBO.

HE HAD MENTIONED A 12 V BATTERY. I ASSUMED IT WAS CONVERTED. MY FAULT IF IT IS NOT.

Although I have no qualms with ordering from a website, in your case it might be best to take the old starter to a dealer or automotive part house so that you can verify you are getting the correct one.

I don�t believe that the straight M had a 12 volt starter. Te 6-volt will stand up just fine when used with 12 volts. I converted my M over 20 years ago, it is under a loader that I used to use daily in the winter for feeding. I might have replaced the starter once in that time.

Usually when a starter fries it is because of abuse (running too long because of hard starting), low voltage due to corroded connections or too light a battery cables, or the bushings have worn far enough from use to let the armature drag on the fields, not from too much voltage.

captain k: would take to rebuilder but I'm on the road and needing the tractor the minute I get home so wanted to order one and have it ready to bolt on when I arive. Of the 5 listed, I've eliminated 2 that say they are 3 bolt. I know my M starter only has two bolt holes in the flange. Of the 3 left the first one listed Valubuilt # R1191980 (manuf # 1107448)shows to be for a W-4 1944-53 for $177.99. The second is a 12 V for M, MD,etc 1944-53 but w/o mention of how many bolt holes in flange and the third is Valubuilt # 500424 which says replaces manuf # 1107448 but spins counterclockwise. If W-4s are like my W-9, Maybe that's why it is wound backward so it can be used on a M where the starter is behind the flywheel and throws spur gear forward rather than a W-4 where starter is in front of flywheel & throws backward. Thanks guys---I'm still studying

I looked at Valu Built web site and can see why you are confused. Valu Built print catalog has much better descriptions. Valu Built # R1191980 isfor H, HV, M, MV, Super M stage 1 and W4. it is 2 bolt, with post, 6 volt for 44-53 models. There is no other listing for non super/non diesel M (actually there is listing for 3 bolt M LPG but there was no original M LPG). Price is $144.99 without exchange but catalog is couple of years old. Would not be concerned about year model as IH parts book only lists one starter for all non diesel Ms. All non diesel non Super letter series starters will interchange except for electrical hook ups some have post with nut for cable (all Hs and Ms) others have button with switch mounted on starters. Starters for A, B, C etc, may not have enough power for M but they will bolt in. Hope this is some help.

Ms had 6 volt two bolt starters and MDs had 12 volt 3 bolt starters.

What # is on the tag of your current starter. The one they list R11919880 should be the correct one.

The engine turns clockwise when viewed from the front, M and MD.

Starter rotation may be described as viewed from the rear of the starter but I don't know.

Why don't you have an automotive starter shop rebuild your starter?

I've had good luck with good shops, take your starter in and have them look at it and show you what they want to do.
