I bought a nice IH 606 diesel today, and it only needs a couple of things fixed. The owner said it needed a battery, and we looked at the two brackets for 6 volt batteries, which are evidently wired to make a 12 volt system. He said he"d drop in a new single 12 volt battery for me, which would be as good or better than the factory setup. It sounds fine on the surface, but if it"s that simple, why didn"t the factory do it this way? Am I missing something here? Thanks for the advice you guys gave me on what to look for in a utility tractor for my small tree farm.

Plain and simple: The battery technology back in the early '60s wasn't what it is today.

The big advantage of using two six volt batteries in series is the reserve power. Very important when you have a heavy load on the electrical system. A typical 606 in cold weather will need the glow plugs for at least 60 seconds, mabey even 90 seconds, followed by about 10 seconds of cranking the engine while holding the glow plugs on. A single 12 volt will not provide enough cranking power with a drain like that, and will not last long.

i agree. 2 high cranking 6 volts are better than 1 12 volt. they put 3 12 volts in 18 wheelers just for the cranking power to turn the big 500 hp motors.

I run 2- 6 volt batteries in my 460 Diesel, they will crank longer than one 12 volt batt will.

If you just use it in warm weather you'll probibly get along fine with a single 12.
