We founda s4 good runner, straight tin. $1500. the serial #is 525, would that make it rare since it was the 24th one made? or more desirable? or just a plain old s4??

There are several changes within the SW-4 run. The late ones had the seat with a underset spring and a schock absorber verus the coil spring ahead-beyween your legs. There was a modification with the brake lock, and the rear light was mounted higher on the fender. I always wondered what reaction the following situation pravoked: In March or April a farmer purchases a new tractor (SW-4) and does his work. In August of that year (1954) he drops in at his local IH dealer and there is a new 300U in the showroom, complete with all the goodies- TA, IPTO, PS, Fast Hitch and 2 more Hydra Touch valves, power adjust wheels, cig liter, etc., and his 4 month old tractor is really old and dated. The Sw-4 was the last reincarnation of the old style tractors, while the 300U was the New Generation. JD`s ad for the 10 series in `60 was only 6 yerrs behind the times. The 300U deserves as much hype as does the 806. This was IH`s first foray into what we deem as a modern tractor now. QR

I don't disagree, but the standard or wheatland tractors were bought by farmers who only wanted to pull implements, and did not care about the bells and whistles. I have said before, and still believe (I can't prove it) that the 300U was intended to compete with the Ford 8N and Ferguson 30 type tractors (or the newer models, don't know the numbers), and other utility-type tractors. At about that time all manufacturers began to manufacture utility versions along with row crop versions of most of their "small" tractors. IH did phase out the W4/SW4 type tractor and replace it with the 350 wheatland, which is probably more similar to the 350U than the 350 row crop, or the SW4. There was no 300 wheatland, though. The larger W Series 6 and 9 continued on with the W400, and W600 series thru the 560 and 660. After that it seems that the wheatland tractors began to take on more charactersitics of the row crop versions, until only the row crop remained -- even then some models were sold with only a drawbar, for the farmers who did not want to pay for a hitch they would never use.

Better get it as they only made around 2300 and that one being low# makes it worth something.

It's just a SW4, but if I wanted one, the low serial would make it attractive. Would have been assembled in at least the first week of production.
