Allan, is this one of those air planters you're always talking about. I don't believe I had heard the term until I heard it from you and I believe I've been walking around one all this time.

It's my nephew's. Went by there to take a pic of his tractor which I believe is a 1486? Tractor wasn't there so I paid attention to this and dawned on me that's what you've been talking about.

Nephew complains that when bil quit farming, he left nephew with all the "junk" equipment.

Hanging out with you guys the last couple of months, I'm just po'd that I've been ignoring farming for most of the last 20 years. Gonna try to hang out with that thing here in a couple months.

Yes Sir,

That be a 12 row Cyclo 900. A bit newer version than I am used to, but the same design.

Hang one of those buggers on your 3-point and you know you're hooked on to something. :>)

They are powered by a PTO driven hydraulic motor to get the needed 11 lbs of air pressure to throw the seed.

My little 6 row unit was loud! Can't even imagine what that joker sounds like!

Thanks for the picture,

Allan

Unless you hang the bathtub on the front of that Nine with it full of flowerbed dirt, I don't think you're going to get that thing picked up are you? Can't imagine what that thing weighs full of seed etc.

Hi Bud,

Those 3-points will lift one heck of a lot more than a feller would suppose. In fact, the tractor will 'almost' lift it's own weight.

I had two 300 gallon liquid tanks, one strapped on either side of my 766 and didn't even notice the planter was back there. 'Course it was half the weight of this animal, too.

However to be honest with ya, these big 12 row jaspers use a plug in the tractors hydraulic system that ties one of the remotes to the 3-point system. Then, the two cylinder operated assist wheels (hangin' out the back) work at the same time as the 3-point. She comes right straight up.

The tricky part is turning that airplane around at the end of the field. You don't do it in the normal manner, but rather, you plant to the end, then lift and "back around & over" to the next row mark.

They are really sweet outfits and cover a heck of a bunch of real estate in a day.

Oh Yeah,

Forgot to mention. You can't just let these monsters down and go either.

A guy has to make sure he is rolling forward before dropping the planter in the ground or else he runs the risk of plugging up the air tube (with wet dirt), which is inside the shoe. Blank rows really suck! :>)

We have a 1981 800 Cyclo 12 row planter. We have made some changes and up grades to it. We plant 2/3 of our 1840 acres with it every year. We have it hooked to a '78 JD 4840. When full of seed and insectide you know it's back there. BEST Planter IH ever made. I can plant close to 20 acres an hour when in large flds. I can fold and be out on road going to another fld. in 2minutes. More productive than the JD planter we have. It too is a 12 row about a 98 model. It plants the other 1/3.

Hi AJ,

How much to those bins hold now? They gotta hold more than what I used to put in my old 500.

The bins just look a lot bigger on the 800s and 900s.

Thanks,

Allan

Each hopper holds 15 bu. I think our old 500 held 11bu. We have several 80 to 160 acre flds. we sometimes split the planter, one variety one side and a different variety other side. That gives lots of yld. checks across a fld. When we plant beans it's really nice. I can go along way on 30 bu. of beans. AJB

Ya back in the stone age, 1974-1978 we used a 4 row 38" wide pull type one of these, the newest latest thing on wheels at the time, and that was one stipulation. You had to be moving to drop the thing.

We had a 4 row JD lister mounted on the 706, I had 400#s weight on the front of the tractor. When I filled seed and dry fertalizer boxes I had to put a couple hunnerd #,s(full seedcorn sacks)on the hood to hold front end down.
