My 240U doesn't start well at all. Decided to switch to 12 volts but I want to keep it looking original. Picked up a 12 volt starter/generator off an old lawn tractor. It's a Delco #1101874 0024. The stock generator has a fan behind the pulley and is open on both ends. The 12 volt has no pulley and is closed at both ends. Is that ok or should I change end caps and add the fan? Besides the generator, I plan to change the regulator, coil, and the battery. Anything else I need to do? Should I add a ballast resistor between the coil and the distributor? Will the gauge still show charge/discharge properly? Thanks to all

Sounds like you need a rebuilt starter and some good cables. Just get a kick out of all the people messing around with 12v conversions when all they needed was their stuff in good working as the 6v systems started and served when they were new. You sure dont go to 24v when your cars starter dont turn over good. Think about that.

Take your generator to a electricsl shop and have them replace field windings to turn it into an 12 volt. You would also want the 12 volt regulator.

I changed my Oliver 88 over to 12 V. I used a one wire alternator and it worked great. If you change the coil, you don"t need to put in a ballast resistor. Going to negative ground you will need to swap the wires on the ammeter. Good luck.

I changed mh H over to 12v a couple of years ago. I changed only the VR and battery (magneto ignition). The generator was in good shape, puts out lots of voltage, has kept the 12v battery charged for 5+ years. I did notice that when I am running very low rpm, that the ammeter is showing charging. In high idle, discharging. I assume because changing ground polarity. I might chane the wires someday.... Irv

the starter generator that you have will be very dissapointing. they only charge around eight amps. you need to get a twelve volt generator off of a 350 or 450 or a combine, anything but what you have now.

i have just posted how the wiring should go 5 postings down from yours. you should have a fan on the alternator and the regular chevy AC delco work great. and they come with a pulley too.
