Got my cylinder head back from the machine shop and couldn't believe the difference. The odd thing was that I noticed a metallic 'clink' noise as I was carrying the head back to my truck. Thought that was odd. Got home and looked for loose valve stuff and could find none. Finally took a mag light and focused it into the water cavity. Found two wires, one 17" and straight and another 12" with two bends (one at each end). Both were easily fished out with a hemostat. My question is: are they supposed to be there? Are they something left over from the casting process? They look as though they have been in the head since it was made.

Kevin , I worked as a foundry patternmaker for many years . The wire you found may have been used to stiffen or support the core for the passageways. It should have been removed in the cleaning process of the casting. It is quite possible that earlier in its life the wires were not loose ,but somehow partially cast in . This may explain why they weren't cleaned out originally.

Hope this helps
ED

Thanks for all the responses. I'm leaning toward that the wire was something left over from the casting process. The wires were just too corroded to have been put there recently.

Especially liked the Packard with the coke bottle story!

Kevin I saw some of this when I was in the machanic bussiness, thought that it was from the casting procedure and never got it all out.

Hi Kevin,

I've seen all sorts of foreign and out of place materials living in the wrong places.

Me thinks bored factory workers. :>)

Years ago, a gentleman brought his fairly new 1950's Packard into my Dad's repair shop, complaining that he was sick and tired of hearing a rattle in the passanger door.
My Dad took the door panel off and found a Coke bottle lying in the bottom of the door. The bottle had a note inside that read: "So you finally found it, you rich bastxxx!"

Rauville, I have heard that story before. In fact I was about to tell it myself even though I never knew for sure that it actually happened. Thank you for verifying it.

I would imagine it happened lots of times over the years. Probably a sporting event among some assembly line workers, so see who could "lose" the most bottles.
But, I will always remember Harry H.'s blue Clipper, and the Coke bottle that he sent back to Packard Motor Co.

Wierd things happen, such as an unhappy employee. When the clothes washer drain plugged up in my house that was built about 20 years ago, I got to fishing around and found a 1 x 6 inch piece of wood in the drain. Otherwise, in your case, someone could have been trying to clean the water passages out with wire, or perhaps you have a disgruntled (is that a word?) machinist.

I'm not an expert on such things, but I've seen wire in the water cavity of heads before. I've always understood it to be leftover from the casting process, perhaps to hold a complicated core together. That core that formed that cavity would have to be held in place by something. Maybe someone who's worked with sand castings can shed some light.....
I seem to remember that the wires in the head were still stuck in the iron on one end.
