I was wondering if anyone else has drained their trans cases and found 10w motor oil,and replaced it with Hy Tran.I am rather hesitant changing over, and feel it might create a ton of leaks.50 year old seals, and some (bull pinion) are leaking on gummy old oil,I hate to think what light hydraulic fluid would be like.
Has anyone else experienced a changeover and how did it workout?

When I changed the fluid in mine, I drained out about 2 gallons of water and maybe 1 1/2 gallons of what appeared to be Hy-Tran. Apparently it had been neglected in the past.

As far as leakage, I don't think you will find much difference between 10W and Hytran; 90W and hytran, yes. Changing seals, particularly axle seals is just part of the game. I have done both axles on 3 tractors in the past 3 years, ranging in size from the 10-36 rears on my C to the 15.5-38's on my 460 Hi Utility, using only an engine hoist. I work alone, and while I won't say it's easy, if a 5'9" weakling like myself (you're 6'4"?) can do it, you won't have a problem, just need a lot of time.

The best thing to use is Hy-Tran. Use in hyd., trans/diff. If you don't have T/A then you could use regular gear oil.

i use a synthetic (red) gear oil in mine. same as the big rigs use in their pumpkins. they haven't leaked in 8 years and the oil is still red..use the tractor a lot

What brand and weight of red synthetic do you use? By 'oil is still red' do you mean it hasn't been corrupted by moisture or other contaminents? If so, do you attribute this to your working it daily or to its resistence to corruption? Does 'pumpkin' on a big rig mean their transmission cases? I'm getting ready to change the transmission oil on my H so I'm curious about all this.

the red oil is to expensive.!!!

i also use LUCAS engine oil stabilizer in the motor oil to keep the oil from breaking down.

keeps everything lubed up top for a smooth start.
you can get that at napa. 1 quart and your oil pressure will go up and save wear and tear on the whole motor. just a thought. about $7 a quart but how quickly to you want to rebuild. rebuilt mine 8 yrs ago and thee pressure is still 65 -70.

i use this because i used to drive the big rigs and i know it works better than reg oil. we used it in the trany and rearends because of its longevity and not heating or burning up--- we changed the oil every 350,000 miles. it is a 80-90 wt and you can get it at any big truck shop. they have it in bulk so bring a couple of 5 gal pails. i dont know if napa or those people would have it-- worth a call.ask for (red synthetic 80-90 gear oil) you never know. i have a good vent on my trans and i got the vent at the truck shop because they are designed to keep the moisture out from top and bottom. little more expensive but worth it--to me anyway

warranty on a trans or rear using synthetic oil is predicated on changing the oil every 250,000 miles.not doin so voids warranty.before the days of synthetic 50 wt mineral was used in fuller transmissions.a 90wt would varnish the synchrnizers.that oil was changed every 50 thou.go with the manufacturers specs.a lot of engineers have spent a lot of hours reading a lot of info to come up with their recommendations.if by chance ihc does recommend this red oil that could be a different story. i would rather use the hy tran and beable to tell when im getting moisture in the gears.my .02
