Tried starting my Super A today and the cranking motor started to make a wierd sound. It has plenty of spark going into it but was not engaging. When I would tap the side ( with a rubber mallet ) it would turn over. Is there much to fixing one of these and where do I get parts? A friend of mine said that these old motors require a good oiling once a year, I never did oil it. Any advice would be a help. Thanks!

A starter that will only work after you smack it with a hammer 9 times out of 10 needs new brushes. Cheap and easy to fix.

My Super A starter was acting like that, slow to turn over, etc. Took it apart, cleaned the armature, new burshes, etc. Now it spins at 1,000,000 rpm on 12V. It's easy enough to take them apart, clean, new burshes, bearings if necessary, etc. I got everything I needed at NAPA.
p.s. I've been to Truro. Small world.

Paul: If I remember correctly, you live in northern NS. If I am right, take your starter to Al Roland, Roland Auto Electric, in Truro NS. Best starter guy in eastern Canada.

Two posibilities come to mind:

Weak battery and/or high resistance connection in battery cables. Check for loose or dirty connections, make them all clean, tight & bright.

Or, you may need to take the starter off and check to see if it needs cleaning or the bearings need lubrication. Check for worn brushes too while it's off. A decent starter/generator shop should be able to go over it and make it like new without costing a fortune.
