Farmall Regular: Gas or Kerosene?

My 1930 Regular has the starting fuel tank (round cylinder behind the main tank), but the line to the fuel bowl has not been connected for years, from what I can tell. The manual tells me to use gasoline until the engine wams up, then make the switch at the fuel cock and use kerosene.

The carb differs very little from the drawings in the operators manual, but how can I be sure if there were modifications made so it runs just on gas? The seller had it running for 5 minutes on gas when I bought it, to check for basic problems before I hauled it away.

I know the oil depletes faster on gasoline, but is there any other harm to using only gasoline versus kerosene? I"l never run this tractor under load -- hobby only.

you"ve got to have your tractor HOT to run kerosene. not very practical for a play tractor. I"d stick with gasoline.

Make sure too, if you decide to burn Kero, you have a hot manifold. Easy to tell. The hot distilate manifold exhaust goes down, the after market gas exhausts up. I used to mix my regular 50/50 with diesel and gas (hot manifold). Kinda smelled like popcorn frying.

No problems. Lets face the fact that the carb on that is little more than a "fuel mixer". The whole engine is pretty rudimentary. Also consider how much better the oil is now than in the 30s. Most of these tractors haven't seen kerosene in years and years.
Also I don't think the kerosene referred to for running these tractors is the same as the kerosene we think of and can buy today. The stuff before was really "tractor oil" which was the leavings from the refining methods they used then.

Nebraska & Ludwig: You guys have been a great help since I hauled this thing 500 miles from PA to MI three weeks ago. From steel wheels to kerosene, I thank you.

I"m pulling her apart, now that I have all the manuals. SOmeone took care of her all those years. The cleats are hell on the workshop, garage and driveway floor, but it"s all worth it. A complete Regular that runs is about as much fun I"ve had this cold, hard winter..... The Super A next to her is getting jealous, but she should not complain. She was an only child for three years!

Thanks again...
