Goog, Could you post a pic of this ol girl. Show the RH side of the tractor. Show the tank! Included the porition under the tank. It souns like a Stage II, till you said the batt is under the LP tank.
It is probably a Stage I conversion. Is there a X1 behind the serial #?
The stage II were the first rowcrop IHs with factory LP.
Later,
John A.

For those that don't think IH made stage 1 LP ,
look at a SM parts book. You will see LP parts listed for Both stages and some parts differ.Look
at the wireing and battery box placement.TC-46

DWV, I won't go so far to dispute your word, but I am down here in the middle of LP country. And haven't laid my eyes on a Factory Stage I LP to my knowledge.
Will look and see next oppertunity . But the Tank in his descripition screams Stage II As illistrated in Guys Fays book.
All Stage I LPs I have found are Field/Farmer/Dealer conversions. The system are not the usual type Ensign carb and vaporizer system. The carb is a little pancake style w/ no vaporizer. The fuel line is routed along the engine to pick up heat and start vaporizing by the time it reaches the carb. Tank is an after market style. Longwise, with the valves on the LH side of the tank. The steering shaft goes through the LP tank not over .They can be spotted from a hundred yards.
I have never seen his tank setup on a Stage I. Though an uncle of mine had an old M many yrs ago that had this same type of tank set up. But not the Exact tank! This tank of his was a bigger diameter than the factory one.
That is why I ask for him to post pics. I am very anxious to see pics when he posts.
We can visit more after a while.
Later,
John A.

Sounds like factory LP which came stage 1 or 2. Check after engine serial #,should have letter or letters if original LP engine.Live pump maybe
added later.

My guess is that it's a Stage 1 with factory LP and an aftermarket (could be IH also) hydraulic pump conversion, since the battery is under the gas tank. Some say that factory LP was only on stage 2's, I don't know.

All of it. None of it. Anywhere in between.

Actually, I don't think there are any Super Ms with factory LP.

Your serial number indicates that it was one of the last ones made in 1952. The first 1953 model had a serial number of 12516 according to the "serial numbers" link on the left side of this browser. It's a Stage I Super M, which was basically an M with more power, different gears, and disc brakes. The distributor-drive hydraulics were added on later, but they may be factory parts. The hoses probably run to the belly pump, and the battery box is under the gas tank, right?

My dad owned a Super M Stage 2 Factory LP. If memory serves me right, It had a Century Regulator. He sold it in 1974 so its been quite a while ago. He also had a 400 with add on LP.
