This is my first rebuild ('44 H), so I'm going to have lots of questions. Here's the first.

A book I have on rebuilding tractor engines suggests replacing the head studs.

Should I replace them if the studs look to be in good condition?

Should I remove them before taking the block to be cleaned and magnafluxed?

Strictly my opinion ;inspect the thread as mentioned on the studs, only I would buy new nuts but Im a harware nut.The proper torque could probably be achieved without the hassle of removal.Im also thinking if one snaps coming out. You also dont have to go with the magnaflux job if the block boiler pressure tests the block.

If the threads are in good shape and are not worn
on the studs, I would reuse them. Check the nuts too. Hal

A lot of books on rebuilding engines recommend replacing the cylinder head studs every time or every other time you torque them.

I'm guessing that IH used at least grade 5 hardware for the studs. The standard dry torque for a half inch fine thread grade 5 bolt is 85 ft.lb. The head is only torqued 70 ft.lb., so I felt safe re-using them.

The head studs on the H are definitely not grade 5

Yes I believe something like a cylinder head stud would have its own specs and not be graded as grade five ,grade eight or other simple hardware.Purely geussing.

They tell me that if a stud has the following
markings on it A193-B7, it's equal to a grade 5 bolt and will withstand 750 degrees F. This info was provided by A&A Bolt and Screw Co. in Baltimore, MD. Hal
