I have a 1951 Super A that had not been cranked for about a month, Now it cranks right up and runs great for a few minutes (Less than 5) and then cuts right off as if you cut the switch off,no skipping sputtering or anything just dies-- then it will crank right back up and repeat this cycle, have checked fuel bowl and gas lines, cleaned points checked for trash in tank, adjusted needle valve on carb and these things make no difference, any ideas-getting frustrated Thanks

Next time you get ready to start it have a wrench in your hand and as soon as it stops take the carb drain plug out quick. If no gas comes out thats the problem and you can check for a condenser or coil then.

El Toro has good suggestions. Other than those, you could have a "floating" piece of crud in the gas tank that lets partial fuel flow. Take a piece of wire and poke thru the outlet of the tank (from the top). You might have to drain the tank and remove the sediment bowl. Mine did that to me a couple of years ago, engine died 3 or 4 times after, but apparantly I finally got it all out. Also your main jet could be plugged -- I had your exact symptoms once, also-- cleaning the carb fixed it -- otherwise it is electrical as El Toro suggests.

Had these exact same symptoms - tractor left me in the field in middle of winter! Pulled the whole sediment/strainer assy and removed remains of giant grasshopper who was plugging fuel line. Flushed tank, re-installed sediment/strainer assy - now I am happy camper!

Hi Cris, Pull a plug wire off and look for a good spark. Have someone crank over the engine
after it quits while you hold that plug wire near the sparkplug and see if you have a good hot spark. If you still have good spark while cranking then I think you have a fuel problem.
If the spark is weak or no spark, then go down to the next paragraph.

Replace the condenser and then start
engine and see if it keeps running and if it does that was the problem. If it quits running replace the coil. Is this battery ignition on the tractor or does it have a magneto?

Make sure you're getting gas to the carburetor by
loosening the tube fitting at the carb. Hal

Does this tractor have a ballast resistor?
