I was doing some reading of the Paint Committee decisions in the IH archives on shsw.wisc.edu, and I have three questions:

1. On a plow, what is the jointer? My dad grew up on the farm and has no idea.

2. How do you measure plow size, i.e. where do you get the measurement that makes a 14" plow 14"?

3. Is a disk bedder the same thing as a set of disks? If not, what is it?

I hope these questions don't sound too stupid. I love farm stuff but didn't grow up on one.

Thanks in advance, guys!

A jointer is a small twisted shovel that mounts on a rolling coulter on a plow. It's purpose is to throw dirt on the trash to help bury it like a cover board does now. We had these on plows back in the 40's and 50's when I was growing up. You measure the cutting width of a plow by measuring straight across between 2 of the beams. As for your bedder question, the ones I've seen in pictures usually just have shovels, but there are hilling bedders that have disks on them. Hope this answers your questions.
