Got a Farmall A, now what?

A friend gave me a Farmall A ('40). It had been sitting a long time and from what I can tell, the motor is seized, clutch and brakes are seized. Transmission shifts gears and the pto shifts and turns (in neutral). It appears to be complete (the crank handle is even in it's place). But I would say this thing needs to be taken down to Parade Rest and rebuilt completely. It was free so I grabbed it but I don't have time or resources to work on it for the foreseeable future -- Is it worth it keeping around until I can get to it?

Thanks for any advice!

John

Thanks gents! I have several projects in line ahead of it, not to mention my day job. But I'll put the tranny fluid in the cylinders and let 'er sit. At least it's in out of the weather.

When it's time to start, I'll be back for more advice! At least now I know it's worth storing.

Thanks,
John

Hi John, I would keep it too. Like some of the posts that you've received you can take your time
and restore this tractor.

I restored an A that was in terrible
shape when I bought it with a 16-inch moldboard plow. The engine was seized and parts of it was a basket case. All the fenders, tires and rims were all rusted out. I used tranny juice in the cylinders and let it soak. Several pistons came out by driving on the rods and on the others the pistons and sleeves came out together. I used a torch to heat the sleeves and the pistons were easily removed. I used a puck to drive out the other sleeves. I worked full time at my job
and worked at night on the engine. On weekends I worked on the tractor. I have a picture if you ever want to see the finished tractor. Hal from Bel Air MD

keep it definately. but if you want to sell, please email me i would be interested. as for the stuck motor, what i did is fill all the spark plug holes with transmision fluid and let it set, i would check it every few days and refill as needed. i took off the front grill and kept trying to turn over the front pulley untill one day it broke free. by the way, make sure you remove the spark plugs before you try to brake the engine free. if they are full of oil and the plugs are in your motor isnt going to turn over at all. since then i have removed my head due to the 2 center exhast valve were burnt, i was expecting to see my cylinders to be pitted due to the rust, they look real good could even see some hone marks in them. so your engine may still be in real good shape even though it is siezed.

You bet it is.Save it untill you get to it.Just try not to let it deteriorate any further while you store it.I have a 41A it is used all the time and is dependable as ever.I would even try to just get it running in the limited spare time you have.Twenty minutes a day can make progress on a project more than you think. If you sell it youll get plenty of buyers but id say its a keeper.Everybody has a little leisure time to work on stuff.Good Luck with a great little tractor.

Email me if you would like to sell it as is or if you need parts let me know. I would put in some penitrating oil in plug holes and let sit for a while. Then put it in 3rd gear and rock the rear tire every so often it may free up the motor. You probably have a mouse nest in the torque tube that will freeze up the clutch. Also check to oil to see if there is any antifreeze in oil. If so then I'd sell it. Let me know if I can help out. Charlie

Its a keeper! Maybe a local high school student needs an FFA project and all you would have to supply is the material for restoration.
