I have seen new 15.5" tires mounted on 12" rims and they looked very nice. Have any of you seen some that have been used a while? How do they wear? I know a person whould have 14" rims but...$$$. Thanks!

The way I interpret the parts manuals is that IH says you can go one tire size up on a rim. Using the old sizes for simplicity, that means you can put a 13-38 on a 12 inch rim. The "new" size (been around for decades) for 13-38 is 14.9-38. I really doubt if you find much difference in a 14.9 and a 15.5, as far as traction, and as Hugh indicates, the narrower tire will fit the rim better. The way it fits is more important than the way it looks.

The 14.9 38 is far better for tracton in my bookas it is a bit taller then a 15.5x38 as it is the same hight as a 13.6 just a bit wider.

I have never understood the height vs width business. In general as you increase the cross section of a car or truck tire the height increases. I put 235-75R-15's on a 6 cylinder Chevy pickup that came from the factory with 205 75R 15's on it -- killed what little acceleration it had because of the larger tires, along with a major speedometer error. As to the 15.5, perhaps what you say is true. The 15.5 had no whole inch predecessor, so perhaps is a different design than the whole inch tires. I notice that the modern size for the 15-38 is 18.4-38, surely that is taller than a 15.5 or a 14.9??

Oh yea as is a 16.9x38 a bunch taller the a 14.9 x 38 and the 18.4x38 is taller and wider. I amde the mistake of installing the 16.9x38 on my S/MTA just to stay up with the local boy in pulling but i should have went with the 14.9x38 and only lost about and inch in wideth and two or three in hight but what the heck ya don't learn anything till ya try. But with the 16.9 on and the increaced rpm that it runs sure is a nice road tractor at about 30 plus mph.

I just made the engine better and worked with what i had to work with , but anytime that you go bigger you lose work power and gain speed so then if ya want to stay in the ball game then one must make more power.

I'll go one step further than the Vet, I'm willing to bet 13.6 will give better traction than the 15.5 on the 12" rim.

A 15.5 on a 12 inch rim has the side walls sucked in to much and will ware on the center of the tread and not give the traction that one hopes for .

Not only are you two gentlemen are right, but with curving of the sidewalls on the smaller rim. You put a lot more stress on the sidewalls and can have a failure of the tire with a hard pull.

Yes is i have seen on the tractors that i use to pull and we did something that most guys don't do and that is run a higher tire pressure then most , if ya ever dimount a rear tire that has been pulled hard look at the side walls on the inside and you will see the damage . I found out that by running mine at a higher pressure on the tractor pulls that i would do better as i did not have the tread buckel or lose my drawbar hight. .
