Was the D-239 engine used in the 544 used in any other machines?

The D-239 was also used in the 5000 IHC windrower (built in Hamilton). We bought one new in 1982 and have used it continually since. It is a great little engine.

You need to be carful here. The 544 was the only American designed and built tractor to use that engine. If you are planning on replacing a 239 in a 544 with one from say, a 574, make sure that all of the major parts are the same or can be made to work before you spend a bunch of money. For example, I know that the British utilities have an internal oil pump that uses a oil filter set-up that places the filters right where the 544"s frame rail needs to be. Another example is the oil pan on the British tractors, it is a heavy cast design, which the front end of the tractor bolts up to. This also means that the 544 used a different front cover, as that is what it"s frame rails bolt to. The rear plate will also be different, since the starter bolted to it on the British tractors.

Ron: I believe while this is basically the same engine as used in a lot of the tractors wolfman mentioned. I believe the block was cast slightly different for the only Farmall that use the engine, that being the 544.

About one year ago here on YT discussions a guy was looking for a diesel repower for a 300 or 350. Here at one time there were a few of those engines around salvage yards. They came from some of the European tractors equiped with cabs. They had quite a history of electrical fires. I suggested at the time if I were looking to repower and older Farmall with deisel, 239 is the way I would go, thinking of those 239s I knew of. I was advised that may not be quite as simple as it sounded, for the reason I listed above. I would do a bit of part number checking before buying.

Hi Ron, I looked in my I&T shop manual and it would appear that the D-239 used in the 544D is the same as in the 684. Also looked in an OEM parts book and the water pump p/n IH3136053 for a D-239 is used in the following tractors:
544,574,674,2500A,2544,664,684 and probably the 695.

You would have to check part numbers with CaseIH to be sure. There may be some difference to fuel and electrical hookups with US build vs UK build tractors.

Good luck

Sorry Mr. Wolfman; the 5120 had a 239 Cummins mill in it. This was the 4 cylinder version of their 5.9 motor. IH's 239 was the Nuess build of the 159,179 206,239,246 268 310 358 and I belive 402 line. QR.
