I am doing a complete engine overhaul on my Farmall A engine but I don't like the new pistons. I have very good the original steel pistons in excellant condition. I need advice on wheather the old pistons with new rod bearings, and pins would mate well with the new sleeves or is that a stupid idea. I want to do it right but sometimes new stuff ain't made of good stuff.

I just went through the same thing with my SA. It had four ring CI pistons, the new "Sealed Power" pistons were three ring aluminum. I was also told it will run smoother than with the old CI pistons. I was concerned about a possible weight difference & crank balance. My rebuilder told me that on my engine, there are always two pistons up while the other two are always down, they counter balance each other, and a possible slight weight difference would'd be noticible. (V-type engines are a different story, besides, this is a relatively low RPM engine)I did opt for the 3-1/8" dia. step top higher compression pistons instead of the original 3" flat tops. It will give me a little higher compression, and a little more displacement. Should have an easier time pulling the Woods L-59 mower in 3rd. Got it back together last week with new main & rod bearings, reconditioned oil pump, & totally rebuilt head. Runs nice. Be sure & flush out the sludge in the bottom of your block while you have it apart.

Thanks ddg. I am going the whole 9 yards on this engine and I just want it to be right if you know what I mean.

As long as they don't say made in China or something similar you should be good to go!

Dixieland,

I don’t know if this is fact or not but I was told once that a new replacement sleeve and piston were a matched pair, and shouldn’t be swapped around.

If what you are feeling is the lighter aluminum, you will be amazed at how much smoother the engine will run with the aluminum pistons compared to the old iron ones. Aluminum pistons have less weight to start and stop, resulting in less stress on the crank and bearings too.

All my tractors have aluminum pistons in for at least 30 years and I’d never go back. I even saw an aluminum piston in an F-20 once (I still have it) that had a hole in it that was welded shut. It looked like a valve head had broken off and went through the piston. Somebody was brave and skilled enough to weld the piston and it ran that way! Aluminum pistons are nothing to worry about…

My 2 cents

Those new aluminum pistons will be alright that were in the sleeve kit. I used them in a Farmall
A and the tractor was still running ok 15 years later. I used an oversize kit that boosted the displacement to 123cid. Just be sure to clean the block area where the seals for the sleeves
are installed. This is where leakage can occur.
Good Luck, Hal

Use lots of oil when reassembling your engine on the bearings, pistons and sleeves. I like to coat
the bearings lightly with lubriplate too.

Be sure to prime the oil pump with clean engine oil by submurging it in a container of oil and rotating the gear until oil is being discharged.
I like to pressure feed oil through the oil gallery until oil is seen around the rocker arms.
Hal

An important consideration when determining if pistons are fit for re-use is ring groove wear. The rings must fit in the grooves with only a few thousandths clearance, or you'll have poor compression and oil burning.

What is it about your new pistons you don't like?

The new pistons just don't even resemble the old pistons and they are aluminum. It's not what I see though, it's what I feel, if that makes any sense.

I would use the new pistons to get every thing back up to specs,Theres nothing wrong with alunumun pistons, Its what is in everything new you buy, I use them and i couldnt be more pleased with the results, The oversize flat top work well but the stephead pistons are the choise for extra power.
