hello. sorry to keep hashing out this steering thing, but im trying to make this a nice looking instalation. i realy don't want to add all the valves to make it work with the live hyd's,so im thinking of using the factory charlynn pump (i have one that works good..) i do not want to mount it low of the govenor like the factory bracket does..has anyone mounted this pump up high and under the hood so you cant see it? will it turn fast enough off the fan pulley? thanks for all your help everybody...

I too wanted to hide my pump on my straight m. Couldn't find Charl lynn pump so I used a GM one from an older car.Made the brackets, bought a 3 in or so pulley. the smaller pulley gave me more rpm at idle for better steering w/loader.Works good.
designing bracket wasn't too bad.took my time. ended up w/ no hood problems,am also using Gm alternator. In my opinion all M's need 12volts since ihc insisted on using the H starter on both tractors

There is a Charlyn pump that fasten to the front bolt on the manifold plus several other places. It is factory. It fits up under the hood and no body but you knows it is there. You might try Steel Wheel Ranch. I know because I have one. I have had no problem with the power steering or the the charging system. It has an idler pully that adjusts the belt.No cutting the hood or any thing like that. I also have the one that mounts on the govenor. I also have a loader on that M. It all works great. Luck in finding one. Boyd

Your idea can work and I have seen it done. The pump will turn fast enough from the fan pulley. But you need to be mindful of belt wrap for both the driver and pump pulleys!

If the wrap on either pulley is less than about 180 degrees you’re gonna to experience belt slippage (and loss of power assist) when it is needed most.

In other words if you go with a 3 pulley setup - single belt driven by sheave on the water pump driving both the generator and steering pump - the belt will be prone to slip at the water pump whenever the steering pump is loaded. (A buddy of mine learned this the hard way on his 400!)

Keep in mind also if you have the stock SM hood you’re gonna need to do a bit of bodywork to the tin in the area of the steering motor to give is room. The Charlynn motor needs a little more space than an unmodified hood allows.
