I had a post on here a while back about my brother-in-laws Farmall 656 not running.

We have had the carburator rebuilt changed the plugs, points, condenser and had the coil checked We have gas so that if you choke it a lot it runs out of the carburator.
We have spark by letting a spark plug against the block. But when you turn the key it fires for just a few seconds and then dies. I have checked the electric shutoff on the carburator and have juice there

Thanks for the help and ideas before and if you have any others that we might not have thought of or something that we should try please let me know Thanks Jeff

It is good to post back here with the solution to the problem. There are often many possibilities presented here, and it is always interesting to know which one it was. Thanks for posting back the solution. :>)

Jeff This is a 6 12 volt system 12 for starting and 6 for run. You might have 12V to the distributer for starting but if not wired right maybe don't have 6v to run on. The selienod takes care of this. So just turn the switch on and see if you have voltage to the distributer. If you check spark to the plugs as you crank the 12 volt will say you have voltage. Have to check the other around to see if yoy have 12V for start not 6v. You could have 6v for starting but they like the 12v volt to start.

"gas running out of carb" raises a flag to me. I had the same, fire-run-stall problem with a 3010. It was flooding out the plugs. Next time it happens, quick pull a plug and check it. If it is soaking wet you are flooding it. Or also try getting a relight with the choke off, full throttle, turn the engine to clear the flooding. I'd try a lot less choke next time. Be sure to allow at least 6-8 hours from your last "no start" for the engine to dry out.

I agree with Farmalljim to check out that ballast resistor. The first indication is for the engine
to fire and run for a short time until you release the starter switch. Hal

These tractors started on 12 volts and ran on 6 volts so the starting curcuit has wired direct and the running curcuit had a resistor in it the resistor looks like a porcelin (spelling) block normally by the coil but on cars they were on the firewall..Hope this helps my 560s went bad right after I changed the engine so they can go anytime at all..

i have a 656. overhauled it and rewired it fall of 2003. the only resistor on those is for the charging circuit in case the warning lamp burns out to still energize the alternator. well if you have a generator it may be different...just remembered about the early ones. the coil is actually wired to the terminal on the starter solenoid. it was confusing how some of it is designed, but i copied it exactly--it runs.

you say you have juice at the carb solenoid. does the solenoid "click" when it is energized though. you will definitely hear and feel it.
good luck

My 460 has a resistor and if it goes bad, the tractor will fire, but as soon as it starts it will stall. Does your tractor have this?

I think it goes is the resistor a porcelain box about 1" between the coil and the distributor? Thanks

Try jumping the resistor. I think that is what you are trying to say.
