I was raised on Farmalls and Fords. Started farming with my father-in-law in 1971, he had a 70 JD which was the tractor he lkied on the planter. That never seemed "natural" as I was used to foot clutches. One year the generator went bad on the 70, still used it but had to charge it once a week and would run off the battery for a week. Seemed very good on fuel economy, but did not have much power. I aquired an unstyled A John Deere, a 77 Oliver, and a 560 Farmall, guess my preference is still the Farmall.

My loyalty is IH red so don't look to see if I have any green underware with a yellow streak down the middle. I've talked to quite a few old timers and heard advantages on both sides. When it come time for threashing or sawing logs the IH line with the 4 cyl. run the belt nice and smooth vs. the 2 cyl. made the belt slap during opperation. The 2 bangers were supposedly easy to maintain and had less parts to go wrong and farmer friendly to work on for the farmer that only had a fencing pliers and a creasent-hammer. Without working on one I don't know it this is true or not but I didn't think that IH was all that tuff to maintain. Now-a-days the loyalty isn't like it used to be. Its nothing to see or hear about sombody changing colors just cause somebody from a dealer made them mad or shot them a unbeatable price. I still stick with red cause they still have a good product. The Magnum trans is still basically the same as it was as the 50, 52,and 5488 IH just with powershift. It has been a bullet proof design with minor improvments. I could go on with specific storys that are impressive but then this would get to long.

My experiences indicate that in general, the 2 cyl JD's were a little easier to work on but were also more forgiving and would run longer with "farmer fixes." My gosh--some of the things I've seen when I've opened up a couple of my JD's!
But as I've said before, JD's method of replacing a muffler or a radiator is no engineering design to be proud of.
After some thought, based on experiences with an M and a JD A, I might say that the M ran longer without needing the fix and the design precluded a "farmer fix;" in other words, you had to fix it right.

What's better? A Chevy or a Ford or a Dodge? That's about the same kind of question. They all have their good and bad points.

I grew up on a Farmall M and still think an M is a great tractor. But I also have a 48 JD A that fits the same criteria.

So where does that leave me? After considering all of the factors and my experiences, I honeslty think that pound for pound, the Ford N series tractors were the best and most versatile tractors ever made!

I like any and all brands, but the top 2 on my list are IH and Oliver. I bet any tractor is the best if you're on it :) How old are you and what state do you live in. I'm 20 and live in Iowa, and like to talk tractors, farming, etc.

I like red and green. My list of tractors wanted is alot longer on the red side, than the John Deere side. If i could have one Deere, it would be A Styled D, they are srtong tractors, and sound great under load. If i had one, then i would never need another deere. I like red the best though, They are an easy tractor to fix, easy to run, and fun to run.

I have two International Tractors, a 330U and a 606. My last tractor purchase was a John Deere for the simple reason that parts for the IH tractors are getting harder to find with Case/International obsoleting everthing and the fact that my IH dealer doesn't stock any spare parts, everything has to be ordered and if you don't hit it right you can wait a week for the order to come in from Case/International if the part is still stocked. The John Deere dealer is just the opposite of the IH dealer and stocks a ton of parts.Personal preference is that I like both brands of tractor each has it's good points and bad points. I'd still probably be buying Red oif it weren't for the parts issue.

Hey MadMallard..NY, is this parts issue with just one particular dealer or with more than one in your area? We live in central Pa and have two IH dealers very close to us. Both of them almost always have what we need on hand when we go for it. The only part that I can remember ever having to order and wait more than a day for was a piece for the differential in our M. That was only because it was a N.O.S. item that they had to get from another dealer in a different part of the country. The bigger of the two dealers, C.B. Hoober Inc. has a truck that runs to Philadelphia to the parts depot everyday to pickup parts. They also have parts runners which deliver parts to your farm on a certain day of the week if its a part that your not in a hurry for. For us it happens to be friday which is great for preparing for the weekend. Other than that I never have any trouble with getting parts for my IH tractors. I'm not trying to say that this isn't a legitimate problem for you, but I just can't imagine having that problem with either of my two dealers. They both treat us more than fairly all of the time. Have a good one and better luck to you on getting parts in the future.

This question was asked a while back,and sounds rather similar to that "question".....back then it caused a lot of brand loyal comments and basically got into a nameplate war.
In a nutshell....whatever someone owns,they feel is superior to something else.
For example I would say my 300U is superior to those dag-nabbed Deere Johns,but I wont say that.
(the poor steering design drags it down,but I still feel its a decent,hardworker and unless someone gave me a newer JD,I think I'll stick with the Ute).

This might interest to you Nebraska Tractor test.

Super M peak torque 362.8 @991RPM through 845RPM and 355.3 @ 770RPM

JD 70 peak torque 287.9 @ 805 RPM- 748RPM only 21 lb/ft more than the little o Super H @ 266.9lb/ft

IHC 400 peak torque 412.5 @ 924 RPM only 12lb/ft short of the big banger (JD80) 424.4 @ 748 RPM

The 70 had more CID�s per cylinder than all 4 of the H�s cylinders put together the 80 is the same to the 400, looks like they both held their own.

Maximum low gear pull

Super M 5676lbs @ 2.45mph

400 6508lbs @ 2.18mph

JD 70 5453lbs @ 2.18mph

JD720 6647lbs @ 1.24mph

450 7318lbs @ 1.44mph

Big Bang 7394lbs @ 2.06mph

Sounds like a lot of poppin and very little pullin.

JD 4850 PTO 192.99HP Draw bar 164.73HP

5488 PTO 187.22HP Draw bar 163.44HP

The JD�s always had such good fuel economy well HP means Fuel if you look at the numbers they should use less fuel.

IHC 4786 low gear pull 33,468lbs @ 2.15mph the tractor only weighed 34,350lbs.

I'll guarantee that a 70 has more torque than a 400. Horsepower is roughly the same therefore the slower running 70 has to have more torque. What you are confusing is the torque on the reduced pto/belt pulley speed. horsepower = torque * rpms /5252 or torque = horsepower * 5252 / rpms

I do not have the tests but it is not rocket science the tractor with the most weight..best tires on the rear end ... highest drawbar will always pull the most in a low gear...with similar hp.. Who pulled the most at 3.5 miles per hour, where the maximum slippage allowed 15% was not a factor (limitation)....Not to worry superMpuller there is an explanation even if you do not want to see it.

Farmer Girl Take a look at the Nebraska test Between the 2 cylinder JD and the IH 4 cyliner tractor. Don"t have the spec"s in front of me but it goes someting like this a 70 JD has as many CID in one cylinder as a 400 has in all four cylinders. When it gets down to the max torque out put on overload the 70 has almost no torque left and the 400 is stil puting out much torque. After the 2 banger gets below a certen RPM they just die. The only 2 banger I ever saw put out over 50 HP on dyno was a 730D and my ears can"t handle one of them.

I will throw my opinion in here too. I think it depends on what era your are talking about. We have a 44 JD A and a 43 Farmall H. If I had to take one out and actually use it in the field day in and day out there is NO comparison as to what I would use. Hands down it would go to the H. It might be a bit less in HP and not have the extra gear in the transmission but it is DEFINITELY more comfortable and easier to operate anyday. As you move up thru the years to today it becomes a more close matchup to the point where I think today you need to buy based on transmission, hydraulic, and engine options and other features that best suit your own needs. No one brand is going to have tractors to suit every farmer out there. Everyone has different needs for their tractors so some farmers may be better off with John Deere and some better with International or brand X. Dealer service and proximity to a farmer plays a big part in what they buy as well as what they have used in the past. Personally I think people should use whatever tractor best suits their operation, be it JD, IH, MF, etc,etc. As far as reliability as some others have said, I think they are both equal on this issue. They all have one fault or another. On our farm if there is work to be done you will only see an IH tractor in the field doing it because that it what we have and the dealers are closer to us than JD dealers. It also helps that my family has always been IH from the time my great grandparents started farming in the teens. So why is IH better for me? Basically it is because the dealer is closer to us and it is something we are familiar with. Would I ever drive or use a JD? Well our neighbor used to have a 2840 and compared to our 766 it was a close comparison in features but I would still take the 766 anyday of the week. The only reason we have a JD is because we like to hear them run. Just my .02 cents. Have a good one.

Well heck, I guess I'll take the bait and give you a serious answer.

Many folks prefer the red iron to the green for a couple of reasons. 1)Their reliability is legendary. If properly cared for, they will run and run and run with very minimal maintainence. If abused, they still run and run and run.
John Deeres are also known for their reliability.
ADVANTAGE: EVEN
2) The IH's were less costly per hp generally speaking...plain and simple. ADVANTAGE: RED
3) In the 40s and 50s, when tractor farming really took off, IH (Farmall) dominated the competition in the row crop markets. These were tough, reliable tractors, and made many farmers pretty brand loyal over the years and they kept buying IH with similar results. ADVANTAGE: RED
4) It is very likely, if IH had not run in to financial ruin/sold out/etc, and stuck with the quality standards they had up through the 80s, they would still remain even with JD in terms of market reputation. To bad for IH...ADVANTAGE:JD

IN MY HIGHLY NONSCIENTIFIC ANALYSIS, you can see that IH's were just as high quality as JDs at lower cost.

Are they really any better than JD? Nope.
But they are just as good, and for many IH owners, you would have to pry that red machine from their cold dead fingers to get them on a JD. Ok farmer girl?

I am going to go out on the proverbial limb and start sawing the branch off behind me. Tractors are a lot like cars and pickups. They all have their good and bad points. It is up to you to decide what you like or dislike about them and how much those likes and dislikes mean to you. For most of us it was ingrained in us as lads. It was what our fathers farmed with. There are lemons in any line of cars, trucks, pickups, and yes, tractors too. Like they say: One aw-sh** wipes out a lot of at-a-boys. One negative experience can cloud over a lot of good experiences. In the end, it is you that you have to make happy. No amount of us brainwashing you about the glory of the Red machines or the Green machines should influence you. You have to decide what is important to you about either color and go for it. I will probably catch some flack for this but if my detractors do some soul searching they will probably agree to at least some of this. Just my $0.02 worth. Randy

The last two tractors I sold on EBAY ( 32 in the last two years) I had the little missus sitting on the seat, and the buyers all wanted to know if the operater went with the tractor.
