How high are the sleeves sticking up? There was an article in Red Power a long time ago about a guy that couldn't get a head gasket to seat on an A after an engine rebuild. Turns out the sleeves were sticking up too high and wouldn't go down in the block recesses far enough to allow the head gasket to seat. I don't remember if it was the fault of the sleeves or the block but he had to have the sleeves planed off slightly. Brian

Good call, on most engines sleeve protrusion above the deck surface is around .001-.004". I did not find a spec for this engine but if any sleeve is protruding too much the rest of the head gasket will not have enough clamping force to seal.

cajunace,I beleive you should put a head gasket on dry.Now all that copper gasket goop has nowhere to go.In my opinion the head gasket [dry]should be squeezed by the machined surfaces of the head and block.Take the head off remove the goop retorque and see what happens.Anyone that put that stuff on a Harley drag motor with no head gaskets even used was having sealing problems. At 70-80 ft lbs its all trying to squeeze out.[IM not a real doctor just trying to help]

Go to www.weberstractorworks.com and click on
tuneup info. They have the head torque at 80-ft-lbs. My old manual recommends 65 too. Hal

no bubbles in the radiator. brand new gasket. torqued to 65 lbs acording to the book. water not pouring out but dripping along the exhaust side. enough leaking between the head and block to leak down the oil ports to the oil pan.

It could be that your toqure wrench is not reading wright . Try another one and see if you are at the 65ft.lbs. and if so then add 5 more lbs .

I wouldn't get too excited. Run it and get it warmed up and see if it quits. you might want to retourqe the head after warming it up. If it still leaks you can always take it back apart then. even a coating of grease on gaskets will help to keep from leaks til the gasket gets seated.

The key is in figuring out EXACTLY where the water is coming from.

Between the head and block:
No gasket, wrong gasket, bad gasket, improperly installed gasket, cracked head...

Look into the radiator to see if any bubbles are
present. If there's bubbles your head is probably cracked. No bubbles present I would
recheck the head torque. Start in the center
and tighten the head in both directions using a crisscross pattern.Torque to 80 ft-lbs Hal
