Ain"t it always the way?

My failed computer drive is just days out of the three-year warranty. That"s the way my luck runs.

Oh well, onwards and upwards, as they say. :>(

Well the best way to look at it is that a new Hard drive will cost you about a half of what one did 3 years ago and give you 10 times the space. 3 years ago a 10 gig hd would have been $250.00, now a 100gig would be $100.00. Thats Canadian dollars probably cheaper in the US.

What causes a hard drive to crash -- been using computers since 1983, never had a crash -- just lucky I guess?

A lot of the time vendors will stretch the warranty a little, have you contacted them?

We had are's go about 3 weeks ago, a few weeks after the waranty. It is only 2yrs old, everyone we talked to said that was pretty good. You almost think the computer guys know when they are going to crash, set the waranty at a date that is a month or so after they know it's going to crash, so they can get more money from ya. We got our pic's and everything saved, some stuff was lost.

I always like to recycle as many old parts as possible. Have you thought about welding a treble hook on it and using it for a bass lure?

Back in the DOS days (when Windows still had to hve DOS) I wanted to erase a floppy. Told DOS erase *.*. It said are you sure? I typed Y for yes. Only problem is I was on the C drive, so it did exactly what I told it to--I always kept my data in directories, they were intact. Had to reload all the programs, most of which were on CD's, erase *.* also erased the connection between the computer and the disc drive, so I lack to never figured out how to get it back (easy for a computer guru, which I'm not). Also lost hookup to internet, and LAN -- Our computer people were about 300 miles away. After about a week of frustation and several phone calls I finally got it figured out -- never again!

And what, you lost all those pics of your tractors?

Seriously, what does this have to do with Farmalls, which by the way, is the subject of this board?

Has plenty to do with tractors. If He don't got a puter, then he can't give out all his valuble info to all of us on here. I for one, have gotten lots of info from him. Now when someone places an ad, thats when you can speak up about what and what not to post on this board.

I for one don't mind if someone posts something like this even if it is not directly related to Farmalls. Sometimes it's nice to know a little bit about what goes on in other peoples lives- it helps to get to know you guys a little bit. I was thinking of running something past the forum that isn't exactly Farmall stuff, but is farm related. Gee, I don't know, is that legal? I guess if folks don't like it, don't read it. However, it is nice not to have ads and things like that on the forum.
By the way, my iMac would never crash on me, would it?????

I read a article short time back about putting a hard drive in a ziplock bag in a refrigerator for a period of time and it might allow recovery of data (as a second drive after a replacement).

However, I am guessing that you had 100% backups all current ????? ??

Hi George,

Might be something to that "cold" trick. I was 2 days behind on my files while I was fighting with the thing.

Was able to grab everything off yesterday; then thought I could re-write to zero, but the darned thing locks up when it comes up to temp.

Guess it is just a paper weight now,

Allan

Sorry to hear about the bad drive. Being in the IT industry I don't really trust any drive that is over three years old. Matter of fact, I'm due to change out mine now. The positive is that my new drive will hold more data than the three I have now. Has your drive developed some bad clusters or are you unable to access any data on it at all?

Hi Kevin,

Tried every trick in the book to save it and recover. I think I got most of the important stuff off it.

But, when it gets up to temp, it locks and will not spin. I buy a lot of computers and this is only the second Western Digital that I"ve ever had fail.

Part of the game, I guess.

Allan

Sounds like something in the bearing. The drive heats up and binds. Does the drive have a noticable "whine" sound to it? I've noticed lately, especially some of the newer ones, tend to run on the hot side. If you want to recover the files that are important to you, get that drive cold and then hook it up as a slave drive. Boot with the new, good drive and then start copying and pasting the files you want to save. This is the time when it pays to have all your files logically sorted on the drive.

Hard drives have very tight tolerances. The heads float on a cushion of air and don't touch the surface of the platters. If you were to scale it up a bit just try and imagine the empire state building flying across the Atlantic Ocean three feet above the water at six-hundred miles an hour. Anyway, good luck with your recovery.

Backing up your data is a must but with the large size of our files these days choosing a backup solution can be somewhat daunting. Currently, my preferred choice is a combination of flash drive for my real important data (finacial, etc.) and an external usb or firewire hard drive for everything else. Alternatively, in the future, be on the look out for "blueray" disks ( they will hold more than a regular cd) and there is even another standard, HVD, that is in the works that will hold up to a terabyte. Wow...I can follow along with any thread talking about mechanical aspects of tractors, but the stuff you folks are discussing here is way above my head...except the part about the drive heating up when it runs...sounds like some baling twine has wrapped around the axle and taken out the seal and let the grease run out of the bearing or some such.... Seriously though, since the REAL purpose of this board is to let folks use their computers to talk about tractors, I enjoy learing about the computer aspect here almost as much as the tractor part. Good luck to ya Allen, hope you get things up and humming along in no time.

I got a good chuckle out of your reply! I do pretty well on the comp. but Windows XP can be such a pain! Don't forget to quietlly get and old hypo from your doctor so you can greese that bearing! Extra fine ones are great. If you notice your speeds aint so good start in START then SEARCH then cookies. When you see the puppy dog go up to the top and hit favorites and save the page with a shortcut to your desk top. TAKE them all out! now every week you just go to your desk top and open the cookie folder. wipe it out or if you start to learn... Check you cookies after every place you go. You will soon learn the ones you need for Ebay, Old Tractor sign in Etc. Do a disk cleanup and a DEFRAG. This solves a lot of problems. Jeffcat

Might be the perfect opportunity to to rebuild using those high altitude pistons, tweak the governor a bit, you know, more power!! Just be careful and don't mess with the ampacity part of it.
