What's the difference between the IH 350U and the 240U? I'm betting the low number is smaller in size and engine displacement but don't know for sure. Steering is still evidently the main weakness in common among these Utility models.

The main problem is because of the design of the front axle. Its tucked in the bolster and swept back.No chance of using a tie rod to connect the 2 wheels together,so the single steering box has to support 2 pitman arms,2 tie rod assemblies,2 steering arms. Not a pretty picture.

And the heavier the tractor, the bigger the problem? Maybe I'm lucky that I only have a 240U.

Front implements (loader) sure do their damage to the front ends on the Utes.Worn/broken steering boxes, worn tie rod ends, bent adjusting sleeves, loose splines at the steering arms, broken spindles...they are all possible thanks to heavy front loads and years of wear to these beasts of burden.IH sure should have given more thought to beefing up the fronts of what was to be ultimately very versatile machines...the lay persons economical substitute for a Payloader,or a true loader/backhoe.

Guess that describes mine pretty well. The loader is real heavy duty and I think it's been on forever, probably saw heavy use in a state highway department sand yard. I could live with the loosey goosey steer-a-battleship steering, but I have a right wheel that will suddenly flop outwards broadside to the line of travel if it encounters rough terrain. (The left stays straight no matter what.) First time I thought I had broken the tractor but I learned it can somehow take it, thanks be to the IH god that was. But it stops the rig cold and has been problematic when trying to bucket snow in close proximity to the garage or house this winter. It has also gotten me stuck in rough terrain crossing a broken field; suddenly no forward momentum and then I get stuck but good! And the broadsided right wheel, which doesn't respond well to the spin-the-bottle steering, offers great resistance when I try to back up from being stuck; no rocking is possible. I have to dig and jack some of the time if the bucket won't free me because my rear tires are 97% worn and don't get a lot of traction in tough spots.

Oh well, my 240U was affordable and it runs most of the time, but best in dry fair weather.

There are a few around in my area (NH). We have 2 460 Utilities (1 gas 1 diesel) a 300 Utility with a Lord loader, and a 350 Diesel Utility. All of them are equiped with good working power steering.

I'd say not rare but not common. I think a decent one would be a good find.

Dave: I can readily agree with what you are saying, with one condition, LOCATION. I have traveled around a bit, and in some locations utilities are very plentiful, while in other places they are like hen's teeth. Since coming to YT close to 5 years ago, I see the same thing right across the continant. Areas that embraced the utility really went for it, those who didn't hardly even took a look.

I moved here to Strathroy ON 3 years ago. Didn't know a lot of history about the area. I can tell you there must have been one H@## of a good Massey Harris dealer here 50-60 years ago. I am out in a rural farm area, 1 mile grid on roads, about 3 properties to the mile. I'll bet I could find you a 100 restored Massey tractors within 5 mile radius. They run from early 30s into mid 50s. It looks to me as though these guys didn't embrace Massey Ferguson. I don't think they went for IH utilities either. I would say they went on to Farmalls, Deere and now FordNH

The value of the 300/350U in my opinion is their versatility.Seems with the right attachment, there isnt anything they cant do.Being 50 years old, they are very affordable. However the dreaded steering problems put a big black mark on the value of any Ute.If somebody ever comes up with a permanent fix (either in manual or Power form)for that steering, the Utes may eventually reach the stage of "highly desireable".For all of them out there, the aftermarket sure is ignoring them.
Fellow 300/330/350U owners dont give up the ship....maybe someday they will get the credit they deserve after 5 decades of loyal service.

Paul,

I'm not very familiar with your 300's and 350's -- what possibility is there to use remote hydraulic steering like the 40 series Deeres do, just on a smaller scale?

Eric

Paul, I have read your posts on the 300u with some interest. I have one too. I think you are spot on on the steering being the weakest component. I have tried for years to get a power steering unit, in good shape, at a reasonable price (<1000?). Haven't done it yet. I have seen one 300U with a powersteering box off a 460U - I was told he had to grind the castings a bit, but it fit. I was hoping this company in Minn. would make a aftermarket unit, but they told me they lost thier engineering mule, so didn't proceed with it. I have thought of undertaking this myself, but I don't know if I have the time. I would probably try for a rotary unit, rather than one with steering cylinders. A bendix box of some sort would be the cheapest. I saw a suggestion here recently of making the pittman arms longer - that might just work good enough! Irv

According to the IH Tractor Data Book, there were 12,998 gas models made and a total of 18525 made including diesel's.

How many are still around and in good shape? Not many. I have a 300U in cherry condition and at auctions, every 300u and 350U is ready for the scrap heap or lots of money to restore.

Guy has a typo in his book (not to mention my typos below, need to read more carefully) 13575 in 1956-57 + 4950 in 1958 = 18525 including diesels, that's the way I read it, but who knows, anyway they aren't rare. Subtract 3033 diesels and you get 15492 gas versions, there were also LPG models. I have 5 Farmalls and a 460HU. None of them are scrap heap versions (one is close) but they all have/will cost a bunch of money to restore. It comes with the game.

In one word, no -- in more words IH made nearly 17000 of them. Most of them were equipped like yours.

Actually, I looked on the wrong page, the number above, 17000 is for the Farmall, the utility number is closer to 18000. These are for gas, diesel versions up each number 3-4000. Sort of depends on your location an cropping practices, etc.
