Oh Brother! Need help again....

Can anyone get me a picture of the tip-out tool box (how it is mounted) on a 686 with a 310 German engine?

Got a feller on the line who says if I get him a picture, he can get me the box.

Take this thread for example, anyone who didn't know what to do with those flip out tool boxes after they flipped open for the 5th time. in 1967, and had lost $25. worth of wrenches, wasn't exactly the sharpest knife in drawer. I spiked mine to the shop wall, divided it in 3 sections and used it to store mower knives, rivits, ledgers, etc. I expect likely its still there.

I suggest the real reason your on here, is a little trip you have trying to impress these guys how much money you have to throw around on your toys. I guess by the amount of responce you get, some guys are into that type of activity. My opinion is you do nothing more than put questions of some poor guy trying to do something himself onto page 2 or 3 or 4.

Alan often spams the board with nonsensical stuff (e.g., bad hard drive, etc.). Once in a while he does post some good info too.

Maybe we need a new "chat & chew" board for the non-tech discussions?

As far as I can see, you guys are the exact polar opposites. On one hand you have a guy that that spends a bit on his old girls to make your head turn as you drive past his place and the other that has the ability to spends, if necessary to make himself smile in the back forty while working. In the end, both for their own personal satisfaction.

As far as spending the money goes, you guys that sell off your spare parts and torn down tractors smile when you get a good dollar for them..... remember, theirs a guy like Allen on the other end, buying that original dohicky showing us, what it takes to put those old tractors back to original condition. Nobody has gone to a show and not admired a tractor that is restored like that. Farming dollars hasn't restored that one, but selling those parts isn't farming either.

One guy "has been there and done that" and shares that with us. He comes here (I assume) to pass the time of day and to help us out when he feels that he can contribute. I think that, we all appreciate that. One guy was forced out, and would like to go back to what he had. Nothing wrong with either ones motivation and intent.

One initiates posts and responds regularly, sometimes about the.....well, without the context of what "yesterdays tractors" was initially intended, I would think. But the mass majority, I'm assuming again, read the posts, drink a bit of coffee well reading them and go on with life none the wiser. If you haven't learned anything from Hugh's posts, your simply a liar.

It seems one would always have a smile and a friendly personality and the other, I don't think I would want to screw with his TA on his 1066 or else.., but he would take the time and teach you everything about the TA, if you wanted to learn and he thought that you were worthy.

A lot of guys (me in this group) post frequently asked questions or posts about trying to do something themselves, and to get to the "level" of guys, like Hugh. Not a lot of traffic on pages 3,4,5,. Been there, project gets delayed or we have to go to other "avenues". That kind of stinks, because you know that there is help here.

Just like the two guys here, there will be a lot of support for both sides of this one, one side will have a lot of posted support and the other side will, just simply node there head at the screen, in support.

These forums wouldn't be the same without either one. I don't know how to end two things, this post or this situation. ...polar opposites. Hound

If I see Allan's or Hugh's name on a thread 9 time out of 10 I read it. With out the both of them this place would be a bt slow.

I lurk and only post when I seem a person that needs some help and no one's got to them yet, these guys seem to on top of everything...

2. I agree, one of the two of us is a total blow-hard and tries to push one heck of a lot of smoke.

4. Yes, you're right. I oftentimes originate a thread just to get a discussion going; if this is unwarranted, I can certainly stop the practice.

On the other hand, I notice you never originate anything but rather just lurk and 'pounce' on people.

Your right, I don't originate a lot of threads. Probably due to the fact I'm not restoring, rebuilding, etc. any tractors. I have 3 tractors SA, 130 and 140. Actually the 140 is my son's project, I just use it and do all the maintaimence. The SA is my baby, other than the alternator it is 100% original. My 130 is a parts tractor, or at least it's been headed that way 3 times, when suddenly I came across the needed parts for next to nothing. Like a steering box for $10. My wife asks both Sandy and I why we bother with these tractors. He never even looks at them, and I do little more than need be with them. That kind of use really doesn't require a lot of advice. To me the real hobby is not restoring tractors, but rather on here with you guys.

You know, I have really never found your threads or posts to be anything but genuine. You do have one bad little habit. While you say your finances are none of my business. How I wish that were true. You bombard us everyday with what you paid for this tractor, that tractor, how much your going to spend on it. I could go on and on but that wouldn't serve any purpose. Inflation across North America has over the years been driven by attitudes like yours. A lot of these guys on here are tractor owners by the skin of their teeth. They don't need inflation. Seems like everytime we old farm boys, ( and yes you are one and so am I) got a raise in milk, beef, grain, etc. corperate America was standing there with their hand out, wanting more for tractors, fuel, fertilizer, seed, etc. It is ingrained in us to fight inflation, it has been our survival. Yes I went to school, even ag college, but most of my education came from the school of hard knocks. I think you know what I am talking about. I survived some of what you didn't, sometimes I wish I hadn't. I can afford to enjoy myself today, but I don't. Just think there may not be enough in the kitty to see me out. I've seen down turns before.

Now you go on and keep these guys up with their information. Just cool that money talk. Whether you know it or not, you are kind of a breath of fresh air here at YT. Five years ago most of the guys on here wouldn't have cracked a smile if someone broke wind in church. That is what I was up against when I came. Lordy, lordy, lordy these guys were a serious bunch. You keep up the good work and don't be talking that foolish talk about going somewhere else, just because some crochity old fart like me tore into you. Most of these guys on here know I'm going to tear into someone every second month. My dad had a passion for excellence. I received a permium for quality on milk every single month of my career as a dairy farmer. I stood behind a grain wagon one night, two of my employees didn't realize I was there. The older hand said the the younger guy, " You better smarten or your not going to have a job. MacKay is damn fussy and he will fire you. This young lad had been doing seed bed prep.

And Allan the flip out tool box was not standard equipment. My 1066 didn't have one, and yes as a $20. option it did matter.

Guess I just like hangin' out around you IH guys 'cause it makes me feel at home without all the hassles and pressures of life & livin' these days. Farm people are just good, decent folks and I like bein' around 'em.

I swear to you that I didn't know I was doing that; the money thing, I mean. If I was, it was a totally subconscious thing going on.

But, still and all, I'm treadin' on some pretty thin ice even being here on this board; I am not a collector in any sense of the word. I could care less about these darned things. They are just tractors; that's all they are. Common as an everyday pair of shoes.

They are just tools to me and I'm putting these old tractors back together to work and I'm buildin' them to be in the same condition just as my other tractors were the day the damned banker sold me out.

So, if I responded to you in a knee-jerk fashion this morning, I can assure you that it was because I've milked those cows, I loaded the shi! and I've done the whole, complete farm thing; all of my life, save these last 23 years of pure agony.

I've been there and I've done that. So, to be honest, I guess it was from my "farm sale ghosts" kicking in and certainly not from anything personal with you.

You're the rich one Hugh, you got to stay on the dirt. I'd give everything I own in this world to be back down there on the farm.

You are one of the main reasons I come and visit this board. Your posts are always interesting and usually informative. I don't care how much or how little $ anybody on this board has to throw around...or how the throw it...the point of these boards is that it is kinda like the old diner...we all line up at the counter and tell our tales and give/receive advice...etc. Take what you want from the time you are here and leave the rest alone.

Sounds like ol' Hugh needs to try to regain his perspective and enjoy life.

I have a flip out tool box that I'm not sure what it fits, if you're interested I could take a picture and send it to you. Tell me what this guy is asking and I probably could beat his price. I'm not blocked if you want to reply directly.

I don't have a clue as to how they are supposed to mount up on a 686; George says they go under the platform on the right side? I assumed that they would be the same as a 656, but I guess that's wrong.

Casey said he would shoot me a picture this morning and if yours will fit, I'd really be interested in it.

But, your 806 would be a large chassis and the 686 is the smaller guy. Different birds. :>(
