Seeing as how the bull pinion seal I changed out was the original 1955 National/IH leather seal....a question arises...
How many out there have changed a seal to find it was still the original one? 50 years on the factory seal is quite a feat. That certainly would never happen in the high-speed(RPM) automotive industry!

I am just now putting back together a 46 Farmall A and every one of the oil seals were the original leather seals and every one of them had worn down and were leaking. I kept all of them, just for show. I think the old timers didn't replace worn out seals, they just kept adding oil to replace what had been lost.

That may or may not be a good idea, I have done it, but eventually the outer seal will be running dry, even if you grease it good first. Then the next time it is changed there will be two grooves. IMO the newer seals, even if they are thin, are superior to the old leather ones.

I have found several, however, they may have been leaking for several years. Speaking of bull pinion seals, the ones on my 460U resulted in absolutely no brakes, but there was no oil outside the covers -- it had been pressure washed and painted over the remaining mud, oil, and grease shortly before I bought it. There was so much dirt and crud inside those brake housings that it couldn't leak. Tractor is currently stripped, hope to repaint it in a couple of months. It must have twice as many small parts to clean and repaint as a letter series.

Same way here....the splined shaft was pretty gummed up from the leaking oil,and the discs were seriously full of absorbed lubricant. That little "well" that IH designed in to catch any leakage and send it back into the case via 2 machined holes was totally crudded up and useless.Years of leakage gummed up those safety features.I never thought leather was a very good seal material, but, still you have to hand it to it....if it wasnt any good all those seals would have been replaced way back in the 60s (or 70s anyway).Eventually I will replace them, but I seriously doubt even the newer rubber designs would ever last as long.

Done a few also, H,M,C,Supers & 300's. This is an area that seems to be neglected. Have not torn into one yet that had good seals, even though brakes had been replaced,in one case several times. All leather!
