Ok, center support out, steering shaft out, water out, pushrods out, governor pipe out, Radiator forward. NOW, how do I break the head loose?

Common problem, takes patience. The idiot previous owner that pulled the head off my C used a large screw driver, and cut a groove so deep the head had to be milled. Get a rigid flat putty knife (any hardware store, I forget the name of the knife), and gently tap it in at several places, it will come loose, and won't damage the head or block if you are careful.

I would try what MO Boy has suggested by cranking
over the engine with the sparkplugs installed. I would be very careful driving a screwdriver between the machined surfaces. I've used a carpenter's wrecking bar to pry up heads if there's any exterior area of the head that you can pry on without damaging the head or the engine block. Take your time. Hal

When I worked for Allis Chalmers dealer the shop foreman raised a big fuss because I put the injectors back in and ran the starter to loosen the head by compression. I had done this before and still do. I have always wondered why he did not like this. Perhaps because it was not his idea.

Might be totally unfounded, but I suspect he threw a fit because he thought you might damage something by blowing the head off the tractor like that. What if it jumped right off the studs and fell on the floor? I don't know if it would or wouldn't, but maybe he thought it could?

I assume you also have the nuts off of the head bolts...next try a tapping a large flat screw driver into the old head gasket as you won't be reusing that gasket. Try it in several places but be careful in placing the tip of the screw driver exactly into the gasket and not the block or the head. It's better to raise up on the screw driver to break the seal than to push down on it. I'd go for an area about 2" from a corner of the head to start with.

Thanks guys. This board is amazing. I'm having a problem and in less than three hours I've got three solutions! It's off. Using the screwdriver method. Then placing progressively larger bolts horizontally in there. When it was up an inch I cut 4 giant wedges from a 2x4 using the band saw. Just tapped them in til they were all the way in, what is that 3 1/2? and then popped it off. Number 4 is toast. BTW block is hand stamped with a "D" on 1, 2, 4, but number three has a "C" by it. What are these letters for?

Thanks Again!!! Gordo-SD
