There has been alot of talks about paint, Wheather to use ih or dupont or whatever other's there is. My grandpa used Automotive on all the tractors he restored, It was and still is good quality paint, If you spill gas on it, just get some water and rag, clean it and your done. Now, My brother had to get a new tank for his H, So we just brought all the tin away to get painted so it would match. The guy used I-H Paint. Some gas spilled out of the tank while driving on a gravel road, so it got mixed with the gas and is inbedded into the paint. I have heard from other people that they will only use auto paint and not i-h anymore. Have any of you had this probablem with ih paint? Could this probablem with paint be that there wasn't hardener and whatever else you put in paint? thanks for any posts.

I have used dupont, rustoleum, mostly all others, and actually had the some of the best luck with the tractor supply paint, a bit of reducer, flow through the gun, and voila. spilled gas on in within a week, (got too anxious and grass growing fast), and wiped it off a bit, and no problems at all, not even orange peel in that area.
type, area to be painted, prep, and care after and you can work wonders.

I am using RustOleum Farm and Implement from the local Menards store. It is very forgiving for a novice like me and it gets pretty hard in time. You can always add hardener if you want. I've had a lot of compliments on the tractors I have done. They are not perfect by any means, but probably better looking than new.

Name brand paints, particularly urethanes, are superior to both tractor store and dealer paints. You get what you pay for. I would try to keep gas off all of them, cured or not. The use of hardener requires a supplied air system, one shot deal or not. Made me sick after the second application. I say this because most people take hardeners lightly -- ain't so. Another advantage to PPG, DuPont etc, is that the spec sheets clearly say what to use for primers, reducers, hardeners, etc. and give exact instructions for their use. They work as a system, no mixing and matching, follow the instructions, and if you have any skill at all, it is hard to mess up. That makes them EASIER to use than cheap paints. Dealer paints are for dealers who give the customers tractor a quick paint job after an overhaul, etc, or for the person who really does not have the time or desire to remove the various parts of the tractor and prep them properly. If you do a lot of prep work, there is little sense in using cheap paint. If you don't want to do the proper prep work it makes little sense to use expensive paint. Paint is one area, perhaps the only area where OEM is inferior to aftermarket.

I've used it all and did a little experimenting as well. i've found on the IH paint i use Dupont hardner and can buff in 24 hours if need be. it also resists the eliments good. this has been my experiences and my two cent's!!!

I use IH paint and never have any trouble once it cures. After the paint drys it is still several days or weeks before it hardens up so it don't scratch easily. One time I did use some cheap degreaser that faded the paint. I won't use that degreaser no more!

The automotive paint is better ONLY if you use hardener with it, but you can also put hardener in the IH paint so basically it looks like a draw to me. That being said, I use the IH paint without hardener, and a gas spill on the tank will look bad but I have always been able to remove the stain with rubbing compound, and then a coat of good wax and the paint looks like new again. If you actually use your tractor for work, then the higher priced paint just doesn't make sense. Sooner or later the paint will get scratched, (even with hardener) and repairs and touch-ups are much easier with the IH paint without hardener.

Yeah, what Rusty said. I sprayed some Omni a while back. It really goes on well. No doubt the automotive paints are good, but the IH paint I've used so far will vary extremely little in color from one gallon to the next. If you have it mixed, odds are that maybe two out of six batches will be "IH red". I've seen too many dark red and orange IH tractors. I'm definitely not knocking the automotive paint, I'd probably be using it myself, except for the variances in color.

Since my 350 in stored inside and only sees light duty I painted mine with Van Sycle oil base without hardners. It took almost 6 months for it reach a reasonable hardness level. Automotive paints resist fade MUCH BETTER then conventional impliment paint but are far less forgiving to errors in amature application. The tin was sprayed on while all the castings were brushed on with a high end paint brush. There are no brush marks to the average viewer.

That's pretty much how I do it, except for the paint, the IH paint is a much higher quality than the van-sickle and only costs a few cents more. I also brush the cast parts, lets you put it on heavy and thick. A good quality brush will not leave any marks.
