Hi all!

I would like to know where I can get a part for the Thompson "Uni-ball" power governor on my M. I specifically need a replacement throttle shaft. I put this kit on some years ago. Is there still a contact for the company, or any source that carries these parts? Thanks so much for any advice!

The Thompson governor package was designed and marketed by the Thompson brothers, who ran a general repair garage in Cicero, IN, back in the '50s and '60s. The rights were sold to someone else at some point, but I don't know who. The previous response concerning the Rocket governor may be on the right track. I've got two tractors that received the Thompson units in the early 1960s, and they were the best available at that time.

The governor called Rockit now may be the same.
I have made the IH shaft work with the arm for helm joint like you have before.

Are you talking about the shaft that connects the governor to the carburetor? If so, I would think that it would be the same as on any other M.

Yes, it is the throttle shaft assembly between the governor and carburator.

It is slightly different than the original part. The Thompson gov throttle shaft has (on the governor end) a lever with a threaded hole that a ball socket is bolted to. The orignal uses a clevis arrangement.

I might see if I can get a standard throttle shaft and see if I can modify it.

Now that you have described it I know what you are talking about. That arrangement does provide for more precise control. I don't know where you might find one. Just as an idea, I have been able to disassemble the shaft and remove it from the housing (standard IH) and then put it all back together again. I think it is the clevis end that will come off. Could you take yours apart and just rebuild it?
