Towing/Hauling a Farmall Super A

Hello Everyone,

I am in need of some advice. My Father in Law has a 1952 Farmall Super A. It has rear wheel weights and it also has a front snow plow.

He is moving and asked me to haul it to my place for him. We live about 30 minutes apart. Lets say 25 miles and that would be high end for sure. Maybe closer to 20.

One hill to go up and over and down.

I don't have a proffesional trailer per say. All I have is a 6' x 12' Leonard with a 3500 lbs axle. The tires are only rated for 1100 Lbs each though so Safely I suppose we would only be looking at 2200 lbs. There are no trailer brakes. I am towing with a Toyota 4runner that is rated at 5000 lbs with a class III hitch.

Would it be SAFE to pull this tractor on the trailer or Am I asking for a problem.

I almost hate to pay someone to haul it such a short trip. I know the tractor will easily fit on the trailer with room to spare.

Thanks for any help on this.

Mark I would drive the tractor. Some said rent a trailer. Just a ward about renting a trailer. The DOT says all brakes must operate with one valve, so unless the trailer has electric brakes and can be operated with the foot brake of the tow vehicle the brakes are illegal. Haveing said that you might get by. Don't try it here in Iowa. I don't know how U haul gets by but they do.

im not to sure id want to drive it 20 miles, every a or super a i have owned has had the roller bearing bad in the steering box. at high gear the stearing walks all over the place.

if you haul it, dont make the same mistake i did. i loaded it to close to the rear of my trailer and it was actualy lifting on my hitch instead of pushing down... well a few miles at 55 and i almost wrecked, my truck started going from side to side on the highway, and the more brake i used the worse. i almost had a big wreck. so when i got pulled off the road i pulled the tractor a little closer to the hitch not to much, but just enough to put a little weight on my hitch and it towed real nice.

i weighed my tractor at a local tractor pull (my first time pulling) and it weighed just a tad over 3000.

hope this helps.

Mark: I see pitfalls in some of the suggestion you have. Before I were to drive a tractor that far, jack it on each side to see how tight your axle bearings are. Your father in law may be like me and not had tractor in high gears in past 5 years. While driving would be great fun, listen for power train noise, before you leave.

I'll give you one piece of advice on trailering tractors. Don't touch it unless you have tandem axle trailer. Secondly balance, your trailer deck should be twice as long as tractor. You must get the right tongue weight on your towing vehicle, or your trip will br living hell. That is true of any truck, large or small, once you get over 65% of rated load. I drive a tractor trailer, rated load is around 25 ton. Believe me some of these bozos that load you can make the trip miserable.

The beauty of hauling a tractor, you can stop and move it provided you have the extra trailer deck.

By all means drive it!!! I own a 1944 Farmall A and drive it every chance I get. 4th gear full throttle is quit exciting!!! As a matter of fact I will be attending an endurance run in April 115 miles on the A.

I bet you have a rental place -- Typical trailer rental for a 7000 lb capacity tandem axle trailer is maybe $30. A LOT of people rent those. Total weight including the trailer would not be over 5000 lbs -- that is the safest way.

I haven't done this, but lots of times the guys on here have said that uhaul doesn't like tractors on their trailers, because they can't look them up in the books for weight. Make sure you tell them you're moving an old convertible or something similar.

Not talking about U-Haul -- I've rented trailers several times -- no trouble. I have had the rental place talk me into a heavier trailer than the 7000 lb capcity ones, but my half ton doesn't pull them worth a darn.

Mark, Per Guy Fay's data book the tractor alone weighs 2385 lbs. With the loader, weights, etc. plus trailer weight you would be overloaded for the trailer you noted. Your trailer might be too short as well since the tractor is 9 feet long without the snow blade. I had a tractor moved about the same distance here in Missouri for $50.00. I think that would be money well spent. For the safety to yourself, others and possible damage to a red tractor I would come up with another plan. Could you safely drive it with someone following in a vehicle with flashing lights on a suitable day? I've seen a lot of Amish buggies on your roads also. Be careful.

I would be concerned about not being able to get the load balanced properly on the trailer. Those single axle trailers can really whip if not loaded right. You should know someone with a tandem axle trailer you could borrow, or rent a U-Haul.(Driving it sounds like the most fun!) John.

Mark. Super A's are rated at 10 mph in 4th. gear. Pick a nice day, and drive over if you can get on back roads. You will see things that you have miss on other trips. Get a slow moveing vehicle sign for the back and have fun.
