Farmall H Brakes...HELP!

Gear oil is pouring out of the brake covers on my H. So I pull the cover and the wheel that the band tightens against. Then I take the six bolts out of the plate that seems to house the seal, expecting this plate to pry off when I tap it with a hammer and pry with a screw driver. It has a gasket behind it, that I'm sure was leaking also. It looks to be a metal gasket. Well the plate will not come off...and before I break something, I need to know what is holding this thing on so tight and what do I need to do to get it off. Thanks for the help.....

As others said, STOP! If you try to pry off that "cover" you will break something. That cover is the bearing holder and cage for the pinion gear, shaft and bearings. It overlaps the bull gear and can't be removed until the transmission is opened and the bull gear taken off the axle. It's possible to replace the seals without removing the pinion cage. I doubt the gaskets behind the pinion cage are leaking enough to be a problem. I'd try just replacing the seals, because removing that pinion cage is a big job.

It is possible to break either the bull gear or the bull pinion housing if you don't remove the bull gear first.

If you don't want to take the cover off, let me tell you how an IHC mechanic fixed mine when I had the same problem. Remove the PTO and the bearing housing that goes with it. This gives you access to the inside of the rear end. Reaching in through this opening, remove the bull gear retaining cap bolt. Jack up the side of tractor to take the weight off of the rear wheel on the side that you are working on. Remove the 4 cap bolts that hold the outside axle bearing retainer. Pull the axle shaft out enough to disengage it from the bull gear. Reaching through the PTO opening, move the bull gear back and to the side enough that it clears the bull pinion casting. You can now safely remove the pinion housing. Reverse the procedure to put it all back together again.

Don't know if this will help you, but it is how the IHC mech. fixed mine without removing the top cover.

STOP,You are on the verge of a common mistake. The casting that holds the seal and bearing is held in by the bull gear. Forcing it will break it. The trans cover has to come off to get to it. You may find the ball bearing is bad also as the shaft will move and cut out the seal. Good luck.

You have the transmission overfilled.
