i overhauled a super m engine and we put it on the dyno today. it was running smooth until we started to put a load on it and it started backfiring into the intake. pulled the valve cover off and found the # 4 ex push rod came off the rocker arm and was bent. How could this have happened. the engine had a complete over haul and the head was rebuilt. any ideas?

Bent pushrods are caused by valve-to- piston contact, or somthing between the valve and the piston. Possible the head gasket let a bunch of coolant dump into the combustion chamber, which then got compressed between the piston and the head, and held the valve closed. Another possibility is a broken camshaft. If just the very rear of it broke as it was pushing the #4 exhuast valve open, that would explain the bent pushrod, and the engine would still run on 3. Better pull the head.

Cart before the horse. The pushrod bent, THEN , as it was too short it came off the rocker. When your engine "backfired" it caused a tremendous overpressure in the cylinder that had the bent pushrod. I'd look for timing problem. ANd zero in on that cylinder. Double check rod installation. Valve length . That cylinder has major problem to bend the pushrod.

Do you have a magnaflux machine for eyes or something? It's absolutely incredible that you can glance at a head with your natural eyesight and deem it good!

Seriously, you won't see most head cracks on a cursory visual inspection.

You've got some serious issues there... Better get out the wrench and start tearin' 'er down again...
