Any tips on unscrewing the water pump pulley on an M to install a new fan belt? The set screw and nut came out pretty easy. Have used penetrating oil and bolt blaster for three days and pretty serious raps on the square shoulder but no progress. The threads look sharp with some overspray. I don't want to pound too hard on the cast. Anyway to lock the fan so pulley won't turn when struck? Thanks for any help. Dick Davis

Dick – I’ve had good luck using a hand-held pneumatic air hammer. (Borrow one if you haven’t got one). Use a blunt chisel tool and have an assistant grab grab and hold the pulley with a big pair of slip joint pliers at the generator sheave to keep it from turning. Alternately buzz the adjustable flange in both directions to tighten and loosen. The vibration, in combination with more application of panther whiz should bust it loose after a few repetitions.

One tip: Before you try the above, make sure you got all the set screw out when you unscrewed it! I had the set screw on my SH twist off several threads inside the hub, leaving the hub still firmly locked even though it appeared the set screw was out. A welder buddy managed to get the busted end out after some fussing around with his wire welder. And once the busted end of the set screw was removed the adjusting flange turned easily by hand.

Good luck!

Nearly impossible to get that to unscrew if the old belt is on there and it is tight. You'll have to cut the old belt off if you have not done that. I just replace a cracked flange on my I-6 (was cracked when I got the tractor). The flange was missing the set screw and rotation of the pulley had tightend the flange up so the belt was tight as a bango string. No way I could turn that flange until the belt was cut even though the threads were not stuck and in great shape. Quite a job to replace the flange. Thought I could do it without removing the radiator but no way. Fan, WP packing nut and front WP bearing retainer have to come off before the flange will screw off the hub.

Wire brush the thread clean more panther pee a long small tipped drift punch and tap you could cut the old belt off and add a littel heat to the nut but not much if the old belt was out of the way you will be able to get to both sides of the threads with the panther pee and it may move one way just a bit and work it back and forth , and yes they will break been there done that.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions. Yup, I had allready cut the old belt off. Bob, the set screw looked complete when it came out but I will double check to make sure it's out. I'll try to wire brush the threads but space or lack there of is a challange. A little heat and the impact seems like the next course. thanks again for the help. Dick Davis By the way Bob the 300 still weeps hydraulic so the gas tank is coming off again.
