Hey boys,

Any of you ever use these Miraco water fountians. I have been fighting the frozen water pipe situation long enough and this summer will want to install a heated water fountain. I live in Mass, cold. Does anyone else live up here with these fountains and do they work well. I am now running two big tank with two 1500 watt heaters and the barn electric is killing me.

I have had one of those for 10-12 years. sits outside, when it gets to about -20, which we usually get every year, we usually cover the balls up with old insulated coveralls, cause the cattle are not out overnite. and didn't have any problems with it. To prevent the balls from freezing, you can apply vasoline to them. till now irt will not leave unless there is one to takes its place. we do not have a heater in it.

I have two of the 2 hole Mirafount waters that are almost 10 years old. They work great. They now have these with a very small heater in them also. If you don't have enough cattle using one them you might need one with the small heater. Mine do not have heaters and work just fine.

Be sure that you adjust the water level/balls as recomended. To tight is not right.

GOOD LUCK

i have 2 of the 6'? big spring tubs in the freestall for my cows. they have been trouble free for 3-4 years. another area of the freestall has a 4'? tub type, not as much traffic= freezeup problems. i also have 3 of the 2 holers with the balls in the heifer barn. as noted the balls tend to freeze shut in very cold weather. they are much harder to clean out than the tub type, although the newer design on the ball type should help that problem. none of the mirafounts have heaters in them, just the risers into the ground. we used 15 gallon soap barrels with the ends cut out for our risers. hth.

I use one of the insulated frost free tank. Happens to be Universal Co-ops version. For our climate I used the 48" earth tube (minimum length I could get). Only problems are with 1. freezing rain (may have to break the balls loose), 2. if I forget to turn the cows in a couple of days before it gets below 0 sometimes the line freezes in the top of the tank. I also use a propane fired heater on a big tank (different herd), it runs me about $2 a day in gas when the temps are below 20.
