Now if you want to play a bit, keep out couple of acres, maybe a corner that would not be physically viable for a tennant with large equipment. Then get a suitable tractor to play with. and have 38 acres pay for your hobby.

Another matter some of these guys mowing production figures, they must have a good shade tree.

Probably not too many in that area, but a trail mower, with two 7 or 9 foot sickle bars, would be what I would look for, unless that "tall grass" is really a mess and has little trees and shrubs coming up in it(wouldnt think so after only a year without being mowed). We pulled two 7's behind a Super H for years with no problems, so that 300 could handle it easy. In these parts, the only thing a "brush hog" is used for is mowing tight spots like around newly planted trees in shelterbelts. Oh, and the county uses 'em to mow the ditches too I guess. In other words, if you plan to mow something with more ground than the average yard around the outbuildings, you'd be better off getting more mower.

Unless of course you already have the brushhog and don't mind taking the time to use it.

I might be the odd man out on this one, but if I had 40 acres to cut, I sure wouldn't be doing it with a little 5 or 6’ bush hog.

I'd be looking for a 100 hp tractor and a 16-foot swather. 40 acres is a fair amount of grass to be knocking down.

BTW, where you located in WNY? Might be able to find you a farmer to work the land rather than leave it fallow.

When I was a boy, I used to run an old JD 50 with a 9' cutter bar on a #8 mower. 15 or 20 acres was a pretty big day goin' round and round and round. :>)

I do agree that the price on the 300 is a kinda high, especially for one that needs work.

I do agree that bar mowers wouldnt be suited for mowing where there's stub posts or rocks or other crud to hit but he said this feild was mowed two years ago, so it should be fairly clean. The IH-type bar mowers have a break-away feature on them anyway that will let the bar swing back if you hit something solid....and you can probally guess how I know that ;).

He says "tall grass"... To me, that means waist or chest high. I doubt if a 300 would even pull a 6' rotary cutter thru that.

Sure could be wrong tho; if we are talking about grass a foot tall, it would still be one heck of a long day to knock down 40 acres.

Unless someone has gone and changed the size of an acre when I wasn't lookin'. :>)
