Yesterday in Alberta four young policemen were gunned down and killed while surrounding an illegal marijuana grow operation at a farm near Edmonton. Other officers were fired upon and managed to seek cover, the shooter apparently killed himself....and our Government here in Canada is considering legalizing personal pot, I feel sorry for those four young men and their families. Legalizing pot should bring Canada lots of druggies, more drugs, harder drugs and the wave of crime that accompanies the drug trade, more shoot outs like this, more drug wars , more violence on the streets and more shattered lives...why do morons always get elected? My prayers are for those young RCMP Officers...Mike in Exeter Ontario

It certainly is a terrible tragedy. All of them were in their late 20"s early 30"s and had their whole lives ahead of them. They said that one of the officers had just gotten engaged to his girlfriend. The families will sure need a lot of prayer to get through this horrible time.

My prayers for the families of the slain officers.

Events like this really get my blood boiling. I don"t know what our country is going to be like twenty years from now, the way Canadian politicians act. They see no harm in drugs and would probably legalize them at the drop of the hat. Maybe they should go on a tour of the Netherlands and see just what that country found out when they legalized drugs. And don"t get me started on the subject of gun control. We have spent BILLIONS (yes Billions not millions) on our gun registry. Every Canadian should sleep a lot sounder at night knowing that the government knows where every hunter or target shooter"s gun is. Meanwhile smuggled illegal or stolen weapons cause the vast majority of gun violence here.

At least the criminal shot himself and saved us from a media circus, not to mention the cost of keeping him in prison till he died.

I am afraid we will see many more RCMP widows in the future.

John

My prayers and condolences to the families and friends of the murdered officers.

As I was reading the other posts about gun control both here and in Canada, I wondered what whould happen if EVERY female was REQUIRED to pass a gun safety program and then be REQUIRED to carry a gun, what would happen to the number of rapes??

Check Isreal- about 1/2 the women there get drafted at 18 (religious exemption for about 30%) and learn to use small arms. Reserve duty keeps them available until about 35, civil defense from about 35 to 50. Assigned weapons vary from galils, m16s, AK47s to Berreta and Browning pistols. Private purchase pistols available for women. Crime rate other that terrorist actions is low. Rape for Israeli women low. Arab women with no training or weapons in PLO area tend to be hurt much more often. Druze and Christian families subject to draft/training tend to have rates close to Isreali secular rates. Draft women here for militia duties, require them to pack and watch if crime rate drops to close to Isreali rate. RN.

Michael: Tis a shame out government spent all the money they did on gun control, rather than fighting real crime.

Folks are finding out here, and while some still are loath to admit that those states that have passed laws legalizing the carrying of side arms, have actually reduced gun related crime, the fact is that the criminals realize that anyone at anytime may be in the position to thwart their deed. Some in law enforcement have had to eat their words, as they were the ones who have lobied the hardest for gun control, thinking that it would make their job safer, but the exact opposite happened. Gun laws did nothing to keep guns out of the criminal"s hands, only the law abiding citizens. The unintended consequences of strict gun laws made both law enforcement and criminals more brazen. Both of which are disasters waiting to happen. A well armed citizenry keeps both elements honest. I firmly believe that an unregulated law enforcement, or a criminal with just one illegal gun can wreak more havoc on society, than Joe citizen can or will with a house full of guns. It still saddens me tho when an officer goes down because of a criminal who shows little or no regard for human life, but will beg for his own when his own is in jeopardy.

I am SHOCKED! Shocked that such a thing could happen in a country where all illegal guns were supposedly confiscated and destroyed. I thought that gun control laws were supposed to prevent this kind of thing. Yea, sure they will. (this is called sarcasm)

My condolences and prayers for the slain officers and their families.

Crystal meth is here, according to sources is not as prevelant as in other areas yet. I on the local volunteer fire department and we are comming more and more aware of these operations and the hazards that come with them, and pot grow ops.. Can't belive people risk everything including their kids health, for a high or the money. Nasty crap.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the officers familys and friends.
