Not El Toro but it still sounds like you have either the timing off or the plug wires switched. Why did you set the valves at .014 that seems a little tight. If you still have the valve cover off #1 plug compression stroke would be both valves closed with timing pointer at notch. Then starting at #1 on cap clock wise direction 1342 they go in order from front of motor to back 1234 let us know also is the rotor turning ok at all times? JON

Plug Wires are on correct. Firing order is cast into the block just below where the plugs go in. Whats you recomendation on setin the valves cold. I know they are supposed to be set at .017 Hot. But if the engine ain't runnin how can i do that. Heres how it all started. Ran good this year Haulin Hay. Parked it in the barn for a month or two and started her up and she was only hittin on three. Papaw said run her anyway. So i did. We was haulin Hay again and had the wagon bout loaded MAX. She starts to backfirin. Just a loud sound that makes your ears ring when your sittin on the tractor. She died and ain't run since. I'm really wanting to get'er fixed so i can show my Ag teacher up at the FFA tractor pull.He Loves JD's but i'm all RED POWER.

You are setting the valves in the wrong direction. When set cold, set them at 0.018 or 0.019, then reset them to 0.017 after you get the engine warmed up.

Hi Joe, You didn't give us all this info when you first posted. Have you ran a compression
check on all cylinders? Sounds like something may
have occurred in the engine when it backfire and quit. Did the distributor point to No1 when you
brought the engine up on the compression stroke?
Those plug wires have to go in the right sequence
on the dist. cap. As the rotor turns CW your next plug to fire is 3, then 4, then 2. You can set those valves by cranking that engine over until No1 is on the compression stroke. Use your thumb. Both valves are closed on No1 cylinder
and the valves can be adjusted to .017" cold.
Watch the rotor as you turn the engine until the rotor points to No3, then set valves to .017",
then do 4, then 2. Do that compression check
and post the results. Hal

I guess you would start at the begining. New plugs? Plug Wires? Coil Wire? Then points and condenser,Points set at .020 at high side of cam that opens them. Then Timing ,Fuel supply, Timing order is cast in block for distributor and firing but its still 1234 on engine front being 1 and rear most being 4 . Do you have a good fuel Supply to bowl of carb? Just a few things I have owned Hs and Ms for 30 years and worked on alot of neighbors also Things can go wrong but I would check the list above .. JON
